Conway, AR - In the final day of the 2017 Hendrix Invitational the Hendrix College Men's Soccer team was hoping to pick up their first win of the season. The battle was between the Warriors and the Pirates of Southwestern University. The Pirates controlled the pace of play throughout giving Southwestern the 7-1 win and the overall Hendrix Invitational crown.
The Warriors played tough in the first half, keeping the defenders for the Pirates on their heels. The Warriors finished the first 45 minutes keeping the number of shots close only being behind 9-11.
Evan Munro was busy on the corners as Hendrix was awarded three corner kicks in the first half.
The Pirates did mount a fury midway in the half, scoring a goal to go into half time up 1-0.
Unlike like the opening 45 minutes, the second half was played loose throughout by HC. SU had their chance to grow their lead and took it early on.
The Warriors were able to get on the board in the 88' minute when senior
Billy Gardner had a beauty of a shot sail into the net.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Pirates had ran the score way up and there was not enough time to mount a come back as HC fell 7-1.
"Today was a tale of two halves," said Head Coach
Matt Kern. "I thought our defensive shape was decent for the first 45 minutes, and we created a handful of quality chances on the counter. The second half, we had difficulty dealing with Southwestern's press. Although the results are not what we hoped for, we learned a great deal about the speed of play and mental focus needed to succeed."
The loss was the Warriors second loss of the season. They were outshot by Southwestern 26-12 overall and were awarded 12 corner kicks compared to just five for the Warriors.
The loss drops Hendrix to 0-2 overall. The Warriors will travel to Marshall, TX on Tuesday, September 5th to face East Texas Baptist at 7 p.m.
