Jackson, MI - The Hendrix Warriors men's basketball team traveled to Mississippi on Sunday for a match-up with SAA foe Millsaps College. The Warriors fighting momentum helped them early; however, Millsaps was able to play just as strong and take a 16 point lead at half en route to an 86-61 win.
The Majors came out of the starting blocks firing, taking advantage of Hendrix hitting three of their first four shots. Junior
Preston Smith got things started for HC with a made free-throw to put the Warriors on the board.
The home team stayed in the lead thanks to the three ball, knocking down three-in-a-row from behind the arc turning a nine point lead into an 18 point lead. The Majors shot very well from three in the first half, knocking down nine of their 16 attempts.
The Warriors didn't back down though, as freshman Marcis Hall, Smith, and
Kam Brasfield contributed on the offensive side of the court to get the game back within 15.
Millsaps increased the lead once again thanks to timely long range shooting.
Smith led all HC scorers with eleven going into the locker room for half time. Brasfield added seven points and one assist going into the break, as Hendrix looked to keep the first half energy going in the second.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Majors stayed strong in the second half and took control early. While the lead for Millsaps remained, the Warriors continued to play tough down low against the Major's defense.
Eight Warriors saw playing time in the second half, with five different Warriors finding their way on the score sheet. Eight Warriors came down with at least one rebound, while four earned at least one assist.
Hendrix also won the turnover battle, committing just ten turnovers on the afternoon compared to 15 for the Majors.
Brasfield finished with a team-high 16, and Smith chipped in with 15 of his own as Hendrix dropped to 4-12 on the season with the 86-61 loss.
Michael Calamese finished with a team best three assists while Hall also paced Hendrix with seven rebounds.
The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, January 19 when they play host to the Colonels of Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
