Martin Scores 18 in Big Win Over Vikings

Conway, AR - The Hendrix Warriors women's basketball team hosted an SAA rival Berry College today. The Warriors entered the game with a record of 9-4 overall, 1-1 SAA coming off a win against Oglethorpe.

Berry opened up the game on a mission jumping out to an early 7-2 lead halfway through the first quarter. The lead in the quarter was as much as eight, heavily because of the tenacious defense of the Vikings.

Hendrix did crawl back into the game with a couple buckets to end the quarter, taking the lead 13-12.

The Warriors continued to pour it on and extend their lead in quarter number two. Leading 28-18 the Warriors' Leah Smith knocked down a three to give her team a 13-point lead.

Madison Martin shot 5-8 in the first half. Her 12 points led all scorers. She also contributed five rebounds and one assist.

Hendrix went into the half leading 34-18 dominating the Vikings in the first twenty minutes of play. In addition to Martin, Mary Rhinehart tallied six points and shot 50% from the three-point line. Smith was well on her way to another strong game with five points and two rebounds.

The third quarter was eerily similar to the first half; a lot of scoring for Hendrix, not much scoring from Berry. The Warriors' defense was astounding, holding the Vikings to only seven points for over four minutes to start the third.

The Warriors' lead was as high as 20 points, ending the quarter with a 52-35 lead.

The Warriors took care of business the rest of the way cruising to a 79-63 win. Hendrix had great performances all the way around and were led by Martin. Martin continued her strong play with 18 points, eight rebounds. Smith continued her consistent play with 17 points. Rhinehart was also able to get in double figures with 10 points.

"We executed very well on both ends for a couple of long stretches," said Head Coach Drew Gaeng. "I am proud of our focus and effort from the whole group."

The win improved the Warriors record to 10-4 overall, 2-1 SAA. They currently sit in second place in the SAA standings.

Hendrix hits the road next with a contest against Birmingham Southern. The game is on Friday January 12th and start time is 6:00 pm.
