Strong Second Half Effort Propels Hendrix Past Lynx for Big SAA Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Still in search of its first Southern Athletic Association win of the season, the Warriors embarked on its shortest trip of the season Saturday when Hendrix took on Rhodes in the next-to-last regular season game for both teams. After falling behind 10-7 in the second quarter, the Hendrix defense came through as sophomore defensive lineman John Phillips recovered a Rhodes fumble and took it 25 yards to the house for a score. After Rhodes scored late in the second grame, Hendrix netted 20 unanswered points as the Warriors landed both its first conference win of the season and first road victory as well, 30-20.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Rhodes took the initial lead after a five-yard touchdown catch that capped off a 13-play, 77-yard drive for the Lynx.
- Senior kicker Sandy Burks put Hendrix on the board when he successfully converted on his eighth make of the year early in the second quarter.
- Trailing 7-3, Phillips recovered a Lynx fumble and took it 25 yards to the house as Hendrix soon held a 10-7 edge with just under 12 minutes to go until intermission.
- Freshman dual threat quarterback Deondre Henry put the road team back on top after he scrambled from 37 yards out midway through the third quarter.
- Freshman running back Austin O'Brien tallied his second collegiate touchdown after scoring from one yard out with 5:59 left in the third. 
 - After two more successful field goal tries from Burks and a Lynx score late, Hendrix managed to hold on for a 30-20 conference victory.

OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:
- Junior Mason Doerr converted four completions on five attempts for 29 yards while Henry had 19 yards passing on four completions.
- Sophomore Kip VanHoose rushed for 98 yards on 17 carries with a long of 23 on the day.
- Henry recorded 95 total rushing yards on 12 separate carries against Rhodes.
- Sophomore receiver Blake Hinton registered 21 receiving yards on two catches. 

DEFENSIVE NOTABLES:
- After recording eight tackles at the break, junior defensive back Cory McGonigal tallied a team-high 12 tackles on the day; eight of which were solo ones and four assisted ones.
- Sophomore Ronnie McShan, freshmen Mitchell Johnson and Tanner Hartsfield all managed to record six tackles in the win while senior Collin Meyer, Phillips and freshman Colten Johnson carded five.
- McShan picked off Rhodes' PJ Settles with 44 seconds to go in regulation to all be seal the victory for the Warriors.
- In addition to the impressive fumble recovery for a touchdown, Phillips carved up two sacks for a loss of a combined 13 yards against the Lynx.
- Both Mayer and freshman linebacker Anthony Jackson teamed up for a sack for a loss of three yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES:
- Sophomore kicker Charles-Antoine Gingras recorded seven kickoffs for a total of 399 yards (57.0 average).
- Senior punter Garrett Wolf nailed two punts for a total of 70 yards (35.0 average).
- Freshman defensive back Carter Weakley returned a kick return for 64 yards while freshman linebacker Gunnar Burks had a pair of punt returns for 22 total yards.
- After going 3-for-4 from field goal tries Saturday, Burks is now 10-of-12 on the season (80.0 percent).
- Burks' last successful field goal Saturday of 44 yards became a new season-high for the North Little Rock, Ark. native.
