Strong Finish Propels Warriors Past Majors

Conway, AR - The Hendrix women's basketball team (16-7, 8-4 SAA) were in action on Sunday afternoon as they hosted the high-powered Millsaps College Majors.

In the opening two quarters, Hendrix had Millsaps on the ropes. Boasting a lead as high as six, (8-2) at one point, the Warriors seemed poised to take a lead into the locker room against the Majors squad. Millsaps would try and take the lead but HC stormed on taking a 20-17 lead into halftime.

Leading the charge in the opening set of quarters for Hendrix was Madison Martin, whose four tallies topped the Warriors scoresheet after 20 minutes of play.  Alongside Martin was Kessie Jenkins and senior Leah Smith, whose four points each helped Hendrix.

Come time for play to resume after the break, the Warriors quickly caught fire; matching shots with the Majors as the score remained near even until the closing minutes.  With regulation winding down, and the score tied square at 42, freshman guard Vinessa Daniel made her first points of the afternoon count: Daniel cranked a go-ahead, tide-turning three-pointer to vault Hendrix to a three point advantage, at 45-42.  From there, Millsaps tried to stay relevant, though Daniel's dagger proved to be the catalyst, as the Warriors defeated the Majors by an eventual final score of 60-47.

"I'm proud of the girls for grinding one out," said Head Coach Drew Gaeng. "It wasn't pretty but we are happy with the result. Feels good to send our seniors out with a win at home."

With the crucial win on home court, Hendrix moved themselves to a 17-7, 9-4 SAA record.

The statistical leaders for the victorious Warriors went as follows: Martin 13 points and two assists, Daniel, eight points and five rebounds, Jenkins, eight points and four rebounds, and Leah Boehl seven points, two assists, and three rebounds.

Hendrix will look to keep the good times rolling on Saturday, February 17th as they will be back in action on the road for a showdown with rival Rhodes College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
