Atlanta, GA - The Hendrix College women's basketball competed in the Semifinals round of the SAA Conference Tournament today where they took on the number two seeded Rhodes College. The number three seeded Warriors helped themselves in a big way with a convincing 63-56 OT win over the Lynx to advance to the SAA Conference Championship Game.
The first quarter was a low scoring affair, with both Hendrix and Rhodes keeping close tabs on each other. The Warriors held the largest lead of the opening quarter, a 10-6 advantage after a
Leah Smith jumper and they would keep that lead closing the quarter ahead 13-11.
The new quarter brought more life to the Warriors, as Hendrix remained in control.
Vinessa Daniel and
Amber Turner combined for ten of Hendrix's 26 first half points, while Turner herself finished the opening 20 minutes with five rebounds.
While sometimes the half can kill any kind of momentum a team has gained just before it, the Warriors didn't let that happen as they kept their foot on the gas throughout the second half. Rhodes however, would end up out scoring Hendrix by four in the third quarter, then opened the fourth quarter with more tough intensity and took the game into overtime. Hendrix would ultimately dominate in OT and come away with the 63-56 win.Â
While a lot of the attention will go to the Warriors offense, which saw three different players hit double digits; it was the Warriors defense that was the star of this show. The Warriors kept Rhodes to just 26.1 percent shooting from the floor and less than five percent from behind the three point line, while also forcing nine turnovers.
Daniel continued her incredible play by dropping 13 points and grabbing three rebounds. Smith scored 12 points of her own while snatching three boards and Turner finished the game with ten points and four assists.
The Warriors will now compete in the SAA Conference Championship Game tomorrow when they take on the winner of the Berry, Oglethorpe game. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. EST.
