Warrior Bats Power Hendrix to Split Against Oglethorpe

Conway, AR - The Hendrix College baseball team was back in action on Sunday, hosting the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University in a SAA Conference doubleheader. Today was also a very special day for the Warriors as they honored their seniors before the start of game one. Zach Torres, Drew Judson, Jake Wiegand, Colin Martell, and Matthew Lillard were the special seniors being honored today.

Game number one of the twin bill was a high scoring affair for HC as they crossed home plate early and often. The Stormy Petrels kicked things off in the top of the first scoring a run to put Oglethorpe up 1-0.

The Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first, and held the 2-1 lead until it would grow the bottom of the second when the Warriors bats once again came alive.

The rally started when Layton Burge doubled down the right field line, and continued when Gerard Russo would get walked.

Jorge Leon followed up Russo with two on and no one out, delivering a single to right field to load the bases. Everyone on base would then advance on a balk scoring Burge. Drew Judson would then ground out to short stop, however it was enough to score Russo from third and give Hendrix the 4-1 lead. HC would score two more runs in the inning to go into the third up 6-1.

Oglethorpe came right back, hitting a home run in the top of the third cut into the HC lead 6-2. The Warriors would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Wiegand drove home Noah Gilbert on a double to center. Two more runs for HC in the bottom of the seventh would be enough to give Hendrix the 9-4 game one victory.

Sean Dehne, Leon, and Judson all had two hits for the Warriors at the plate with Judson leading the way by driving in three. The win brought Hendrix to 11-20, 4-10 SAA on the season as they looked to grab another win in game two of the doubleheader.

Unfortunately, game number two did not go as planned, as the Warriors bats would only put up one run in seven innings to give the Stormy Petrels the game two 4-1 victory.

The inning that saw the Warriors lone run was the fifth, after going down two after the top half of the fifth.

Wiegand started things off with a double down the right field line and advanced on a balk by the Oglethorpe pitcher that also allowed Russo to make it to second. A Judson walk loaded the bases for Tanner Cooper, who would get walked as well scoring Wiegand.

The loss drops Hendrix to 11-21, 4-11 SAA, on the season as they look forward to a non-conference match-up with the University of the Ozarks on Tuesday at home. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
