Warriors Sweep Opening Day of Austin College Invitational in Thrilling Fashion

SHERMAN, Texas - After an impressive 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-8) set victory against Schreiner in the opening match of the season and also of the 2018 Austin College Invitational, Hendrix managed to comeback from a 2-1 set deficit for an exciting 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13) in front of the home crowd.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Match 1
  • After trailing 3-5, the Warriors managed to go on a 12-4 spurt in the opening match to take a nice 15-9, capped off by a powerful kill by freshman Sadie Walker.
  • Following exact set victories in the first two sets of the match (25-14), a quick 10-0 run which included four set assists from freshman Claire Smith, to open the third set and also forced Schreiner to both of its set timeouts. 
  • Back-to-back kills from sophomore Allison Long and junior Lauren Dwyer gave Hendrix the straight-set victory. With the win, head coach Brittany Newberry also picked up her first win as the head coach of the Warriors.
  • Hendrix managed to record 62 points, compared to Schreiner's 25.
  • Senior Brianna Kelley finished with a team-high 12 kills.
  • Smith finished with a team-best 17 assists while Long finished with a game-high five blocks.

Match 2
  • After dropping the first set 18-25 and at a 10-10 tie in the second set, a nice 9-7 run, capped off by a kill from Long gave Hendrix the 19-17 edge in set two.
  • Following a close set two victory and dropping the third set, the Warriors utilized a 8-2 early run to take a commanding 9-4 lead in set four. Dwyer managed back-to-back-to-back kills to give Hendrix all the momentum.
  • An attack error by Austin College gave the Warriors the serve with set point coming for the Orange and Black. A service ace from Walker knotted this match up at two-sets apiece.
  • Trailing 10-13 in the fifth set, Melcher recorded set assists on two of the next three Hendrix points to put this match at 13-13. 
  • Tied at 13-all, Melcher found Walker for the kill to put Hendrix one point away from stealing a big non-conference match on the road.
  • A kill by Dwyer on an assist from Melcher sealed the thrilling victory for the Warriors.
  • As a team, Hendrix recorded 96 digs as a unit, which included 23 from sophomore Jeanette McGrath
  • Dwyer recorded a double-double after a 21 digs, 16 kills performance against the 'Roos.
  • Melcher went for a best 30 assists in the victory.

WHAT WAS SAID
"I couldn't be more proud of the effort and energy the whole team brought today," stated Coach Newberry. "They showed a tremendous grit, especially against a very good Austin College team. We have more work to do, but this was a big step toward what we want to accomplish this season."


UP NEXT
The Warriors conclude play in the Austin College Invite with showdowns against Dallas and Centenary (La.) on Saturday. First match is set for 9 a.m. against Dallas.
