Blevins, Cannon Lead Warriors Past Panthers in 2017 SAA Tournament Rematch

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After recording back-to-back home shutouts for the first time since the 2015 season, Hendrix looked to get a 4-0 setback from Delta State off its minds with the Southern Athletic Association opener at Birmingham-Southern College Saturday afternoon. Seniors Sydney Blevins and Evie Cannon stepped up and recorded one goal apiece off of free kicks en route to Hendrix's 2-1 win at BSC in a rematch of the SAA 2017 Semifinals, a game in which Hendrix took 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following a scoreless opening half, Cannon fired a cannon into the net from a pass by senior Melissa Miller in the 63rd minute for the 1-0 lead for her fifth goal of the season.
- Less than three minutes later, Blevins put the ball past the keeper off a free kick for her fourth goal of the season.
- The Panthers managed to get one goal back in the 74th minute but that would be as close as they'd get.
- Sophomore Laycee Carpenter carded five stops in 90 minutes of action at the net.
- Junior Hagan Griffith managed five shots on the day and two shots on goal.
- Blevins, Cannon and sophomore Stella Krone combined for seven shots against the Panthers.
- Hendrix was only called for three team fouls; all of which came in the second half.

WHAT WAS SAID
"The girls played great tonight," stated Head Coach Jeff Trimble. "We defended well, attacked well and made some great saves in goal. This was a big win for us. Birmingham-Southern is a really well-coached team and plays great soccer. I was proud of how hard we worked and how great we played."

UP NEXT
The Warriors return to Conway for a quick non-conference meeting against Ecclesia on Wednesday before facing another SAA road game against Millsaps Sept. 29. Hendrix and the Royals are set to play at 3 p.m.
