Warriors Unable to Complete Comeback Against Tigers

CONWAY, Ark. - In a game that featured a career-high from junior quarterback Mason Doerr with 339 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns, the Tigers of Sewanee managed to escape Conway with a 38-31 victory over the Warriors Saturday. Saturday's contest also saw eight former Hendrix Warriors enshrined into the prestigious Hendrix College Sports Hall of Fame as the 2018 Hall of Fame Class was recognized at halftime after being inducted Saturday morning. The Warriors fall to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in Southern Athletic Association play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Sewanee struck first with a 30-yard pass resulting in a touchdown on its opening offensive possession, Doerr found sophomore running back Kip VanHoose from 11 yards out to tie the game up at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
- The Tigers responded, scoring 21 consecutive points to take a commanding 28-7 lead but trailed by seven at the half, 28-21.
- Senior kicker Sandy Burks nailed a 27-yard field goal with 9:12 left in the third quarter to pull with four, 28-24.
- A field goal and 13-yard touchdown pass gave the Tigers a 14-point lead after three quarters of play.
- Sophomore Adonnis Butler blocked a Tiger punt and sophomore Jared Bazley scooped the ball up and returned it to the house for a Warriors special teams' touchdown to pull Hendrix within 7, 38-31.
- Getting the ball back, down seven, having over a minute left to go in regulation, Doerr quickly found senior wide out Michael Spainhour for 27 yards to move the chains and to put the Warriors in business.
- Following four completions in a row, the Tigers took over on downs and kneed the ball a couple of times to run out the clock and escape Conway with a 38-31 win.

OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
-  Doerr recorded a career-best 339 passing yards on 28-of-40 passing (70.0 percent) and two touchdowns. 
- Doerr's longest play of the day came when he found sophomore receiver Blake Hinton from 85 yards out late in the second quarter.
- Senior Travis England recorded a team-high 27 rushing yards on six carries.
- Hinton led the way receiving for the Warriors, finishing with 144 yards on seven catches and a touchdown.
- Freshman Tyler Urban added 63 reception yards on three catches while Spainhour finished with 48 yards on three catches.

DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Defensively, sophomore Tanner Hartsfield led the way with 12 tackles on the day, seven of which were recorded by himself.
- Both junior Cory McGonigal and sophomore Brooks Parham tallied in 10 tackles a piece; also recorded a combined 1.5 tackles for loss resulting in a loss of two yards. 
- Sophomore Mason Adams forced a fumble in the third quarter.
- Sophomore Ronnie McShan picked off Sewanee and returned it 31 yards to put Hendrix in business.
- Senior Chandler Marquardt recorded a team-high two pass break-ups.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
- Senior Garrett Wolf recorded two punts for a combined 90 yards (45.0 average) on the day including both landing inside Sewanee's 20-yard line and a long of 53 yards on the day.
- VanHoose returned two kickoff's for a combined total of 145 yards including a 97-yard kickoff returned to the house in the second quarter.
- Burks improves to 6-of-6 from field goal tries on the year after his one success one Saturday.
- Bazley's scoop and score was the first special teams score for the Warriors on the 2018 season.

Up next, the Warriors hit the road and travel east as Hendrix takes on Birmingham-Southern College from Birmingham, Ala. Hendrix and the Panthers are set to begin play at 1 p.m. Oct. 6.
