Warriors Fall on the Road to No. 8 Berry in SAA Showdown

ROME, Ga. - In a classic Southern Athletic Association showdown, Hendrix put its undefeated 4-0 record on the road against the no. 8 nationally ranked Berry Vikings in a battle of the undefeated Saturday from Rome, Ga. In a battle of the two top teams in the SAA, Berry got the best of Hendrix, defeating the Warriors 27-9 after four quarters of play. Sandy Burks nailed three field goals Saturday for the lone points for Hendrix. In the loss, Hendrix drops to 4-1 on the year with a 2-1 mark in conference games while Berry improves to 6-0 and 4-0 in the SAA. Sandy Burks recorded all nine points for Hendrix in the loss while Miles Thompson went 21-for-33 with 245 yards through the air.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Vikings held a 10-0 lead after one quarter of play but a field goal from Burks brought the Warriors within one score after knocking down a 24-yard field goal attempt with 12:15 to go until halftime.
- Following a kickoff returned for a touchdown by the home team, Burks recorded a 29-yard field goal with 9:00 left in the second quarter.
- After Berry nailed a 49-yard field goal, Burks recorded his third field goal of the day; hitting from 32 yards with 3:46 left in the third period.
- The Warriors had the ball with 8:59 to go in regulation trailing 20-9, after Burks nailed a 24-yard field goal to pull the Warriors within eight, a holding call negated the play and forced Hendrix to attempt a 34-yard field goal. The Vikings blocked the 34-yard field goal try and returned it 32 yards to set up the eventual game-sealing touchdown eight plays later.

OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:
- Thompson passed for 245 yards on 21 completions.
- Kip VanHoose rushed 21 times for a net total of 54 yards.
- Austin O'Brien rushed four times for five yards against the Vikings.
- The Warriors, as a team, finished with 245 passing yards while Berry accounted for 190.

DEFENSIVE NOTABLES:
- Against Berry, Tanner Hartsfield finished with a team-best nine tackles and one sack for a loss of four yards.
- Brooks Parham finished with eight tackles, five solo ones.
- Jacob Bremmon, Hunter Lawrence, Jared Bazley, Mason Adams and Jorge Astorga each accounted for four tackles Friday afternoon from Rome, Ga.
- Jorge Astorga recorded the lone forced fumble while Cory McGonigal had an interception right before halftime with a 14-yard return.
- Bazley also recorded one pass breakup in the loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES:
- Burks went 3-for-3 on field goal tries on the day to record the third-straight game that the senior has recorded at least two field goals.
- Charles-Antoine Gingras recorded three punts for 114 yards (38.0 average) while Jaxon Sinclair recorded two for 64 yards (32.0 average).
- VanHoose returned one kickoff for 42 yards while Carter Weakley registered one kickoff return for 26 yards.

UP NEXT:
The Warriors return home next Saturday, Oct. 19, to battle the Centre Colonels at 1 p.m. from Young-Wise Memorial Stadium. Hendrix is 2-4 all-time versus the Colonels.
