JACKSON, Miss. - No. 25 Hendrix and Millsaps (Miss.) split their season-opening doubleheader Saturday at Twenty Field. The Majors won game one 2-0, but the Warriors responded with a 5-2 victory in game two.
"I'm really proud of Andrei (Stoyanow) and the pitching staff," Hendrix head coach
Sean McSheffery said. "They continue to be the heart of our team. We had some young players step up in big roles and situations today. Adam (Bland) came up big when we needed it. I'm really proud of our guys."
In game one, a Keaton Page RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning was all the offense Millsaps would need. The Majors added an insurance run in the eighth when Chris Hart scored on a wild pitch.
Page went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Ryan Erwin (1-0) earned the win on the mound with four innings of one-hit relief plus two strikeouts. Wil Wood started but took a no-decision, going five innings and allowing two hits with six strikeouts against two walks.
Drake Herrera batted 2-for-3 for Hendrix.
Herrera and
Rail Gilliam each drew a walk.
Nathan Silva (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one earned run on two hits with a strikeout in one inning out of the bullpen.
Jack Hodgins made the start but was credited with a no-decision after pitching six innings of three-hit, scoreless ball with six strikeouts.
The Majors committed four errors, while the Warriors had three.
In game two, Hendrix (1-1) trailed 2-1 before erupting for four runs in the top of the sixth inning. An
Adam Bland (1) two-run blast put the Warriors in front for good. With two outs,
Tyler Beard and
Travis Hurn scored on a Hart error.
Four Warriors had a hit in the victory, while five Hendrix players crossed home plate.
Gilliam recorded a RBI.
Andrei Stoyanow (1-0) picked up the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks in five innings on the mound.
Jacob Wagner threw an inning of scoreless relief with a strikeout before
Teddy Olander (1) got the save after retiring the side in order.
Mason Little went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Millsaps (1-1).
Brady Davis (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs, one earned, on four hits with a strikeout, walk and hit batter in five innings.
Like game one, the Majors were tagged with four errors in the second affair.
Inclement weather at Warrior Baseball Field forced a site change for the series to Millsaps.
Sunday's doubleheader between the teams has been canceled due to the threat of inclement weather.
Hendrix travels to Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) for a four-game series Feb. 20-21.
