Warriors Mount 17-Point Comeback, Defeat Sewanee in 69-68 Thriller

Conway, Ark. - Coming off a nail-biting win over Oglethorpe last Sunday, the Hendrix Warriors welcomed high-flying Sewanee to Grove Gymnasium looking to stack another win on their streak and remain in contention for a top four seed in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) tournament. The Tigers entered Friday's contest 7-2 in the SAA with the second-best offense in the conference, led by the league's most prolific offensive threat in the form of Russ Marr.

Sewanee came out swinging early, scoring the evening's first 9 points before a Caleb Squires long ball got the Warriors on the board at the 15:27 mark.

The Tigers led by as many as 17 in the first half, knocking down 9 of 19 three-point attempts to take a 43-32 lead into half.

Tyler Deithloff scored 6 early points coming out of the break, and Hendrix opened the second half with a 17-8 run before a Beau Kronenberger three-pointer gave the Warriors a 52-51 lead with 11:15 to play.

The two would go back-and-forth down the stretch in what turned out to be an epic second half of basketball. Tre Corrigan's two foul shots gave Sewanee a 64-63 lead with three minutes to play before Caleb Squires buried two of his own to retake the lead.

Colten Berry then brought the house down with a thuderous two-handed slam, giving the Warriors their largest lead of the night with just over two minutes left in regulation. A Colin Kahl long ball levelled the affair at 67-67 at the 1:16 mark. Berry responded once again with a left-handed finish off the glass for a 69-67 lead.

The SAA's leading scorer Russ Marr was fouled on the ensuing possession and went to the line for the 1-and-1 opportunity, knocking down the first but saw his second attempt roll out. Deithloff was fouled off the rebound, looking to increase the Warrior lead to three.

His first attempt rattled off the front iron, with Sewanee able to advance the ball into the front court with 00:04 remaining. Tre Corrigan received the inbound and worked himself into a good look from 3. His attempt was just off to the left, leaving the Warriors to celebrate their largest comeback of the season and arguably their most significant win to date.

Hendrix improves to 4-6 in the SAA and will welcome the Centre Colonels to Conway for a Sunday matinee. Hendrix defeated Centre 76-68 at Alumni Gymnasium back on January 8.
