Conway, Ark. - Coach
R.J. Thomas has tapped Matt Marsh as the new infielders and hitting coach for the Hendrix Warriors baseball program. Marsh comes to Conway via Maine, where he spent the last four years as an assistant with the Black Bears.
"I am excited to have someone with Matt's experience join our staff", said Coach Thomas. "I am looking forward to the impact he makes with our student-athletes and the overall culture of our program.
"It is always tough to replace a key member of the coaching staff, but I feel like we found someone in Matt that allows us to continue our upward trajectory as a program."
Beginning as a camp counselor at a youth camp, Marsh worked his way up from working with young travel baseball players, to high school travel players, to high school student-athletes, and into college athletics. At Maine, he has handled the duties of first base coach, assisted with the hitters and infielders, coached the baserunners, developed a vast network of AAU, Junior College and high school coaches, and acted as a camp director for Team Camps, AAU Tournaments at the University, Prospect Camps, Youth Camps and Clinics and the Maine Grizzlies Program.
In year two, Marsh added pitching defense and runner control to his list of responsibilities, along with handling the team's social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
In his time at Maine, the Black Bears have seen seven players ink major league deals, most notably Jeremy Peña, who was a major contributor for the Houston Astros in their 2022 World Series triumph. The Black Bears also churned out Cody Laweryson and Nick Silva during Marsh's tenure, who were both selected in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Coach Marsh has had experience on both sides of the recruiting process, having coached over 500 youth baseball players, of which over 150 have gone on to play college baseball. Coach Marsh made stops along the way with the Long Island Patriots, New York Nationals, Long Island Lookouts, and Long Island Prospects
He founded two programs, Longhorns Baseball Club when he was 18 years old and Motus Academy when he was 21. Motus Academy expanded from 91 players to 238 players within three years, seeing 73 college commitments and one draft pick. Coach Marsh employed 32 coaches in 2017 and over 50 coaches and instructors over three years. During his time there, Coach Marsh assisted athletes with the recruitment process, developed recruitment videos, attended college visits with the athletes, built rosters, tournament schedules, practice schedules and budgets for 16 teams, managed the website and social media account, and interviewed and hired coaches.
Matt Marsh received the Section XI League I JV Coach of the Year Award in 2017 after coaching two years at Ward Melville High School. In 2017, Ward Melville was named JV League Champions and set the school record for most wins in a single season. He managed 31 players in 2016 and 32 players in 2017 without an assistant coach, and posted an overall high school record of 30 – 9 in two years.
Marsh graduated from Loyola University of Maryland with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and a minor in Information Systems.
