Rome, Ga. - The Hendrix Warriors lost 72-68 to Berry in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon at the Cage Center.
The lead changed hands several times early as both teams jumped out of the gate trading buckets.
Natalie Edmonson's three-pointer with 1:13 left in the first quarter helped lift the Warriors to a 16-14 lead to end the quarter.
Edmonson would then hit back-to-back threes early in the second quarter to push Hendrix's lead to 8.
Bella Cates went to the line halfway through the quarter and knocked down 1-of-2 attempts to give the Warriors a 28-18, their largest lead of the afternoon. The Vikings found their footing late in the half and were able to trim the away side's lead to four heading into the half.
Hendrix would keep Berry at arms length in the third quarter, but it was in the fourth quarter that the home side really put their stamp on the game.
The Vikings took their first lead since the first quarter with just over five minutes to play, temporarily losing it after an
Ava Knoedl long ball, but quickly got it back. They would not surrender the lead again for the rest of the contest, despite Hendrix having a chance to tie it with mere seconds left to play.
Knoedl led the Warriors with 16 points and 4 assists, shooting 3-of-12 from behind the arc. Edmonson followed that up with 12 points.
Bella Cates,
Riley Brady, and
Simone Shields all finished with 11 points, with Brady grabbing 14 boards to secure her fourth double-double in six games.
The loss drops the Warriors to 2-12 (0-3 SAA), and they will now return home to host Birmingham-Southern (BSC) and Millsaps for a weekend Southern Athletic Association (SAA) doubleheader. Tip-off versus BSC is set for Friday evening at 6:00 PM from Grove Gymnasium.
