Conway, Ark. - Anthony Boone picked up his first win at Grove Gymnasium as head coach of the Hendrix Warriors as Hendrix fought off a comeback attempt from Austin College to win 73-71 on Sunday afternoon.
Beau Kronenberger began the afternoon on a heater, as the junior scored 14 of Hendrix's opening 16 points while knocking down his first four three-point attempts. The Warriors led 29-8 at the third media timeout of the half before the 'Roos cut that lead to 12 heading into the halftime interval.
Austin came out firing in the second half and gradually established a foothold in the contest before taking their first lead of the afternoon with 3:32 remaining in regulation. Two free throws from
Caleb Squires gave the Warriors a 70-69 lead, but the 'Roos would regain the lead with just under two minutes remaining at 72-71. The two teams traded possessions down the stretch without any points to show for it until Hendrix forced a stop with just seconds remaining to regain possession.
Jaxon Herrera received the ensuing inbound in front of the scorer's table and drove in for a layup with 0:04 left while being fouled on the shot. He would convert on the three-point opportunity, and the Warriors were able to prevent an Austin shot at the buzzer to escape with the win.
Kronenberger led Hendrix with 16 points.
Carson Bower tallied a season-high 12 points with a couple clutch triples.
Tyler Deithloff recorded a 10-11 double-double with 3 assists, while Herrera finished with 11 points.
Hendrix shot 45.2% from the field and knocked down 11-of-33 attempts from behind the arc while converting on 6-of-8 attempts from the stripe. The Warriors out-rebounded Austin 39-33 and matched the 'Roos 30 points in the paint.
The win improves Hendrix to 2-5 on the year. They will now hit the road to Memphis to take on Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rivals Rhodes and Centre in a pair of non-conference contests as part of the SAA Non-Con Classic hosted by Rhodes.
