Conway, Ark. - Hendrix hosted Centenary and Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), two teams who received votes in D3baseball.com's Preseason Top 25, for a weekend of baseball at Warrior Baseball Field, with the Warriors defeating the Gents on Friday night before dropping a pair of games to WashU the following day.
Game 1 vs Centenary (W, 10-3)
On the mound,
Bryson Bales toed the rubber versus the Gents, giving up just one unearned run while striking out five in five innings of work en route to the winning decision.
Bobby Fowler and
Braxton Waller each threw two innings in relief and were superb, giving up three hits and a run each with five strikeouts between the two.
Offensively, Hendrix plated five runs in the first, kicked off by a two-RBI single by
Drake Job with the bases loaded. Job would later score on a wild pitch after advancing to third, before
Ian Guthrie smoked a two-RBI double to left that scored
Joseph Watts and
Griffin Baird.
Guthrie would notch his second hit of the afternoon in the third inning and was driven in by a
Diego Alvarado single.
In the fifth inning, Watts and
Shaun Pope scored on a throwing error from the pitcher after Alvarado seemingly grounded out but then reached on a fielder's choice.
Adam Bland singled to left field in the home half of the eigth to bring in
Zach Marriott and
Diego Alvarado for the ninth and tenth runs.
Game 2 vs WashU (L, 12-0)
Hendrix was shut out 12-0 in the opening game of their doubleheader with the Bears.
David Blackburn was the pitcher of record for the Warriors, with the only bright spot of the morning being
Kyler Oathout and
Michael Liquori making their collegiate debuts and each recording a career-first strikeout.
Game 3 vs WashU (L, 8-3)
The second game of the doubleheader was closer than the opener. After the Bears took a one-run lead in the first, Hendrix responded with a three-spot in the second inning kick-started by a two-RBI single from
Hogan Ralston that scored Job and
Austin Rabago. Guthrie would later score on a sacrifice bunt from Watts.
But that would be all that the Warriors could muster offensively at the plate.
Dylan Kalmus got the start on the mound to make his collegiate debut and threw two complete innings, giving up just one run on two hits while recording his first career strikeout.
