Box Score Little Rock, Ark. - Hendrix was defeated 63-28 by East Texas Baptist (ETBU) on Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium. It was the Warriors' first loss in Little Rock since their 21-20 loss to Berry in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championship game in the spring of 2021.
Hendrix fell behind 21-0 early thanks to two turnovers on their opening three drives. Just under halfway through the second quarter,
Jacob Buniff found
Jax Johnson for a 19-yard score to finally put the Warriors on the board.
But the Tigers would respond with a couple more touchdowns to carry a 35-7 lead into the halftime interval. Hendrix turned the ball over three times in the opening thirty minutes on two fumbles and an interception.
ETBU received the ball to begin the second half and started out with a short field after a surprise Hendrix onside kick went out of bounds. Hendrix held the Tigers to a field goal attempt, which
Ryan Maxwell and company were able to block to give Hendrix some life. The Warriors promptly put together an 18-play, 79-yard drive that was capped off by an
Auvic White one-yard score.
Hendrix then went back to the well of surprise onside kicks, with
Clay Brandenburg perfectly executing a blooper kick that was recovered by the Warriors. After driving down to the Tigers' 4-yard line, Buniff connected with White on a throwback leak to trim ETBU's lead to 35-21. However, that is where Hendrix's good fortune ended.
Trailing 56-21 late, White rushed his way for a career-long 55-yard touchdown, but it was all academic at that point.
Hendrix, now 1-1, now gears up for league play as they host the Southwestern Pirates next Saturday at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
