Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to Oglethorpe

CONWAY - Hendrix and Oglethorpe went through a thrilling, pulsating 40 minutes at Grove Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon that came down to the wire, with the away team ultimately winning 70-68 in the end.

The Warriors (7-12, 0-6 SAA) had a chance to take a 70-68 lead themselves with four seconds to play, but a couple missed free throws gave Oglethorpe the ball back. The Stormy Petrels were then sent to the line with 1.2 seconds left in regulation and buried their free throws to walk out the victors.

Hendrix came out firing in the first quarter, with Bella Cates and Natalie Edmonson combining for three triples in the opening five minutes. Cates ended the game with a career-high 19 points on 4-of-6 shooting from distance and was 7-for-10 from the field.

The two teams traded blows in the second quarter with Oglethorpe able to keep the Warriors within reach. With four seconds remaining in the half, Hendrix in-bounded from their own baseline and were able to get the ball to Brooklyn Rowe on the right wing with just enough time for the sophomore to fire off a three at the horn and give the Warriors a 39-33 lead at halftime.

The back-and-forth affair continued into the second half. Oglethorpe eventually took the lead and completed an old-fashioned three point play to lead 54-52 heading into the final quarter.

Cates would complete a three-point play of her own midway through the fourth quarter to tie the game at 61-61. Forty seconds later, she knocked down her fourth three of the night to give the Warriors a 64-61 lead. The Stormy Petrels retook the lead with 1:43 remaining, but two Riley Brady free throws tied the affair at 68-68 with 1:14 left to play to set up the tense finish.

Brady finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds, her eighth consecutive double-double and her ninth in the last ten games.

The Warriors shot over 45% from the field and 44.4% (8-18) from behind the arc, but were just 12-of-18 from the charity stripe.

Hendrix remains winless in the SAA as the conference schedule flips over into the second half of the season. They will head to Georgia next weekend for rematches with Berry and Oglethorpe.
