Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Two from Long Weekend

Conway, Ark. - Hendrix baseball played five games in three days over the weekend in Conway, going 2-3 against New York University, Dominican, and Castelton.

Game 1 vs NYU (W, 12-4)
Dylan Kalmus earned the win in Game 1, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven hitters, surrendering just four base runners in 5.0 IP. Chance Reed and Braxton Waller combined for 3.0 innings of shutout baseball to shut the door on the Violets.

Hendrix got the scoring started in the third inning with Joseph Watts dumping a bases-loaded RBI single into right field to score Drake Job. Giancarlo Digiacomo then brought in Owen Shaw before Hogan Ralston drove in Ian Guthrie on a sacrifice fly. The Warriors plated four more runs in the next inning with Shaun Pope and Job each recording RBI singles. Job would then score from third on a wild pitch to make it 6-0, and Guthrie brought in Shaw on a sacrifice fly to center field.

After the Violets got on the board in the fifth with a solo shot, Hendrix tacked on two more in the sixth. NYU plated three runs in the 7th to cut the deficit to five runs, but Watts' 2-RBI double in the 8th made it an 11-4 game. Watts was eventually brought in by a sacrifice fly from Digiacomo for the game's final run.

Game 2 vs NYU (L, 8-6)
NYU homered in the first inning to take an early lead, but the offenses for both teams went stale until the fifth inning when Hendrix tied it up on a Jacob Carpentier single to right center to score Digiacomo. In the home half of the sixth, Job belted a bases-loaded double down the left field line to score Austin Rabago and Hogan Ralston and make it 4-1. Hendrix added a fifth run when Carpentier scored Job on a sacrifice fly.

NYU tied it in the 7th inning on a grand slam, and then took the lead on an RBI single. They made it an 8-5 game in the 8th with a couple RBI singles. Watts flew out to left center in the home half of the inning to score Guthrie to trim the deficit to two, but that was all Hendrix was able to muster down the stretch.

Of note, Aiden Leggett was masterful on the mound in 3.0 IP of relief work, striking out 6 hitters without allowing a hit.

Game 3 vs Dominican (L, 7-5)
Hendrix took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Carpentier double down the right field line to score Guthrie.

Dominican plated runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-1 lead, before the Warriors tied it up in the 7th as Digiacomo scored Zane Nolan on a sacrifice fly after Job doubled in the fifth to score Rabago.

The Stars retook their two-run lead in the 8th before Watts scored Shaw on an RBI single. Watts then scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5. Dominican scored two runs in the 9th to seal the win.

Game 4 vs Dominican (L, 6-3)
The Stars got on the board early in the first on a two-out error that scored three unearned runs. They added a fourth run in the third inning.

Hendrix finally got on the board in the sixth as Shaw flew out to left to bring in Nolan. In the 7th, Shaun Pope smoked a 2-RBI single through the right side to score Rabago and Ralston before being thrown out at second base from right field.

The Stars tacked on two more runs across the final two innings to clinch the win.

Game 5 vs Castleton (W, 6-3)
The game remained scoreless through the first couple innings before Castleton broke through in the third inning, scoring two runs on a single and an RBI groundout. The Warriors responded in the home half of the inning with Shaw bringing in Pope and Nolan with a bases-loaded 2-RBI single through the right side. Ralston then brought in Shaw on a sacrifice fly for the Warriors' fourth run to make it 4-1.

The Spartans got back on the board in the 7th on an RBI single, but Hendrix scratched across two more runs in the 8th inning when Rabago scored Zylan Brown on a sacrifice fly before Shaun Pope scored from third on a wild pitch for the game's final runs.

JD Nichols got the win on the mound, throwing 2.0 hitless frames in relief while striking out three batters. Braxton Waller earned his first save of the season after putting the Spartans down 1-2-3 in the final inning.
