Baseball Suffers Walk-Off Loss in Series Opener

Abilene, Texas - Hendrix let a 6-1 lead slip through its grasp on Thursday night versus McMurry, ultimately falling 7-6 on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly walk-off.

The Warriors drew first blood in the top of the second when Joseph Watts singled in Owen Shaw with bases loaded for the game's opening run. Shaw had led off the inning with a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. In the next at-bat, Giancarlo Digiacomo and Jacob Carpentier touched home on an error by the centerfielder on a fly ball off the bat of Nick Echaniz. Watts plated the final run of the inning to make it 4-0 after Austin Rabago grounded out to the second baseman.

McMurry got on the board in the next half inning on a two-out bases-loaded walk. Nate Hirsch entered in relief and promptly induced a double-play ground ball to get out of the inning with minimal damage done.

Hendrix took a 6-1 lead in the top of the sixth off a Joseph Watts' sacrifice fly and a Nick Echaniz single. The War Hawks scratched two across in the bottom of the inning, then tied the contest with a three-spot in the seventh.

Ian Guthrie doubled to lead off the eighth and Owen Shaw's single put runners on the corners with no outs. Jacob Carpentier then sent a fly ball out to left field for a sacrifice fly, but Guthrie was thrown out 7-2 for the second out to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring.

Nick Echaniz sent a one-out single up the middle in the ninth but was left stranded at second to end the inning. McMurry put two runners in scoring position and brought in the winning run on a one-out sacrifice fly to end the game.

Echaniz led Hendrix at the plate on a 2-for-4 evening with three RBIs. Watts finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Hendrix (10-12) has lost eight of its last nine but will look to right the ship tomorrow and even the series with McMurry. First pitch for Game Two is set for 7:00 PM on Friday night at Walt Driggers Field.
