Conway, Ark. - Hendrix hung tough with Colorado College on Friday evening at Grove Gymnasium but proved unable to overcome a slow first-half start en route to a 74-64 defeat to the Tigers.
CC roared out of the gates to take an early 13-4 lead after the first media timout of the half and pushed that lead to 22-9 midway through the first half. Triples from
Eli Lovelady and
Ethan Hopkins sandwiched a Tiger jumper to cut the deficit to 9, and back-to-back layups by
Joseph Dockett made it a seven-point game with 6:44 remaining. The Tigers wrestled control of the half back and took their largest lead of the night up to that point at the 3:12 mark with the score at 35-21, but a 6-0 Warrior run courtesy of Lovelady,
Kyle Roach, and
Holden Plant brought the margin back down to single digits. Colorado College closed the half with a bucket with under ten seconds remaining in the opening half to take a 39-28 lead into halftime.
The deficit got up to 15 early in the second half, but Lovelady stopped the bleeding with his second triple of the contest, and
Rowdy Robinson's fastbreak layup cut the lead to 10 five minutes into the half. After CC got back on the board, Robinson was at it again with another two points inside, and Lovelady knocked down his third three-ball of the night on Hendrix's next possession to bring the lead back down to seven with 14:20 remaining.
The Warriors were able to keep the game within reach over the next ten minutes, with Roach converting on two foul shots to make it a nine point game with 3:53 remaining. But Colorado College was able to close the game out via foul shooting down the stretch, not once letting Hendrix cutting the lead to anything lower than seven down the stretch.
Dockett led all scorers with 16 points and was two boards shy of a double-double. Lovelady and Roach each finished with 11 points.
Hendrix shot 71.0% from the line but just 22.2% from deep, with Lovelady hitting half of the team's three-pointers.
The Tigers did most of their damage in the paint and on the boards, out-rebounding Hendrix 49-38 and scoring 44 of their 74 points inside to just 20 from the home team.
The loss drops Hendrix to 1-13 and 1-4 in the SCAC. They will remain in Conway to close out the homestand on Sunday with a matchup against #7 St. Thomas.
