Conway, Ark. - For thirty-three minutes, Hendrix hung in tough with the seventh-ranked St. Thomas Celts, but eventually gave way as the Celts dominated the second half en route to a 68-44 win on Sunday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium.
Both sides struggled to get going offensively, as the visitors led Hendrix 2-1 going into the first media timeout of the afternoon.
After St. Thomas went up 8-4 midway through the half,
Kyle Roach drained his first three of the game to bring the Warriors back within one point.
Ty Jones then gave his side their first lead on the next possession with an old-fashioned three-point play.
Ethan Hopkins knocked down a triple on the ensuing possession to put Hendrix up 13-10, and Roach's second triple with 6:30 left in the half gave the Warriors an 18-14 lead.
After Hendrix took a 20-16 lead courtesy of a
Charles Hatchett jumper, the Celts scored ten unanswered points before
Joseph Dockett stopped the bleeding with his first trey. Two Dockett foul shots with thirty seconds left sent Hendrix into halftime trailing 28-25.
Jaxon Herrera started off the second half with a bang with his first triple to make it 29-28, and the Warriors retook the lead at 17:43 after
Eli Lovelady converted three times from the stripe to make it 32-31. From there, the wheels fell off. St. Thomas scored another 10 unanswered, and Hendrix went cold from the field. The Warriors ended up shooting just 17.6% from the field in the final half and went 2-of-10 from behind the arc.
Over the course of the afternoon, St. Thomas outscored Hendrix 40-8 in the paint and won the rebounding battle 42-25.
Kyle Roach led the Warriors with 10 points. He was the only Hendrix player to finish in double-figures.
Hendrix drops to 1-14 and 1-5 in the SCAC. They will hit the road this weekend for road contests at Austin College and the University of Dallas.
