Abilene, Texas – Hendrix men's basketball continued its conference losing skid with a 95-65 defeat at the hands of McMurry on Friday night at Kimbrell Arena.
The Warriors (1-18, 1-8 SCAC) started brightly in a contest between the two bottommost teams in the league, taking advantage of three-consecutive McMurry turnovers to take an early 6-0 lead. But the WarHawks (7-12, 2-7 SCAC) answered back with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game.
Joseph Dockett's layup at the 17:06 mark retook the lead for Hendrix. It would prove to be the final lead of the night for the Warriors, as McMurry went on a 13-2 run before
Zach Nolan's jumper put a stop to the bleeding.
Holden Plant's three-ball and two foul shots from
Charles Hatchett cut the lead to two with the score at 19-17. That was the closest the Warriors would get for the rest of the night.
McMurry scored eight unanswered points to put some space between them and the visitors and took a 34-21 lead by the final media timeout of the half. The WarHawks would go into the break with a 51-31 advantage.
The lead was pushed up to 20 not long into the second half and got all the way up to 30 midway through.
Nolan and Plant led the Warriors with 13 points. The total was a new career-high for Nolan, who knocked down 3 of his 8 attempts from behind the arc.
Kyle Roach also buried three triples to finish with 11 points, and
Charles Hatchett was three rebounds shy of a double-double after recording a season-high 10 points, his first game in double-figures.
The Warriors were out-rebounded 43-30 on the glass and surrendered 24 second-chance points. Hendrix shot 38.7% from the field and 34.8% from three but were hamstrung by 20 turnovers, with McMurry scoring 23 points off of those turnovers and also getting 19 points off fast-break opportunities. The WarHawks excelled in the paint, scoring nearly half of their points inside, and shot over 45.0% from the field.
Hendrix will complete the second leg of their road trip on Sunday as they head to Kerrville, Texas for the first time in program history to take on Schreiner.
