Conway, Ark. - For 12 years, Hendrix alum Jamie Tate stood atop the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference single-game record book with 29 rebounds. But on Sunday afternoon she stepped down from her post as
Riley Brady put together one of the all-time great performances in program history. The junior notched her sixth double-double in seven games, scoring 21 points while setting a new program and SCAC record with 31 rebounds to lead Hendrix to a thrilling 75-73 over Ozarks at Grove Gymnasium. Even by Brady's standards, it was a truly breathtaking performance.
The Warriors secured the season sweep over their in-state foes after Friday night's win and improved to 2-0 in conference play in their inaugural season back in the SCAC.
Hendrix led 61-51 with a minute remaining in the third quarter but began to see their lead slip as Ozarks closed the period on a 5-0 scoring run and scored five of the first six points in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to two.
Natalie Edmonson's fastbreak layup gave Hendrix some cushion with the score at 64-60, but the Eagles completed their comeback with the aid of two triples to take a 68-64 lead. Ozarks took their largest lead of the evening with 5:06 left, leading 70-65 after a couple of foul shots.
Carter Crane's jumper cut the lead back down to one possession and, with under two minutes remaining,
Chloey-Rei Brown scored four unanswered points to retake the lead for the hosts. Brown first converted twice from the stripe to trim the deficit to one. Ozarks missed a three-ball on the ensuing possession, and after Brady grabbed her history-making 30th rebound, Brown's running floater put Hendrix back on top for good at 71-70.
The play of the night came on Hendrix's next possession. After Edmonson's running jumper came off the back iron, Brady went up between two Eagles to come down with her 31st rebound and finished through contact to set up an and-one opportunity. She successfully converted from the stripe to complete the three-point play and give Hendrix a valuable two-score lead with 21 seconds remaining, which
Wes Sullivan's team were able to see out through the end and secure the win.
Brady's 31 rebounds rank second in all of NCAA Division III this season, and currently sit 33rd all-time in Division III history. Through seven games, she is averaging 14.7 points and 20.0 rebounds. Brady has not yet met the minimum number of games played this season to be eligible for NCAA statistics, else her rebound average per game would sit well atop the NCAA Division III leaderboard.
Brown, Crane, and Edmonson all finished in double-figures as well with 11 points each. Crane also contributed four rebounds and three timely blocks as Hendrix executed crucial defensive stops down the stretch to keep the Eagles at bay.
The Warriors out-rebounded Ozarks 53-40 and ended the day with 23 second-chance points. Much of those were due to Brady's relentless tenacity, as 17 of her 31 rebounds came on the offensive end. (Editor's note: offensive rebounds are not typically tracked in the record book, but this is most likely another school record for Brady.)
Hendrix also outscored the visitors 28-20 in the paint, which helped make up for a poor performance shooting from behind the arc (4-of-21), and a 70% conversion percentage from the stripe helped push the home side over the edge.
With the win, the Warriors (6-4, 2-0 SCAC) have won five on the bounce and sit tied for first after the first completed matchweek in the SCAC. Hendrix now hits the road for their first conference road trip of the season as they head west to Texas for contests versus Concordia Texas and Texas Lutheran.
