SUWANEE, Ga. – Nine Hendrix College student-athletes were selected to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship team in each of their respective sports. The recipients are – junior Arden Brazzeal (women's tennis), senior Ben Thomas (men's tennis), junior Brie Seebinger (women's golf), junior Michael Cathey (men's golf), freshman Laura Gressler (women's track & field), senior Bill Hyatt (men's track & field), junior Robert McCarthy (men's lacrosse), senior Clark Sims (baseball) and senior Brittiny Casteen (softball).
Brazzeal, from Bentonville, Ark., compiled a 5-10 record as the Warriors' number one single player. She also went 5-11 at number one doubles, while primarily teaming with senior Dorothy Schuler.
Thomas, of Omaha, Neb., went 6-12 in number four singles for Hendrix. He also compiled an 8-10 doubles mark at the second spot. Thomas is a former All-SCAC Honorable Mention.
Seebinger, from Albuquerque, N.M., was second on the team with a 101.3 stroke average. She was the top finisher for the Warriors at the SCAC Championships in Tunica, Miss., placing 32nd.
Cathey, of Little Rock, Ark., was third for the Warriors with an 83.1 stroke average. He had the low round for the season, shooting a first-place 77 in a dual match win over Dallas in March.
Gressler, from Dallas, Texas, ran a season-best mark of 5:39.93 in the 1,500 meters at the Washington University Invitational. She also competed in the mile during indoor season.
Hyatt, of Springfield, Mo., threw personal bests of 39.14 meters in the javelin and 9.93 meters in the shot put at the Harding Bison Challenge in April.
McCarthy, from Richardson, Texas, was second on the Warriors with 92 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers while serving as team captain. He holds the Hendrix career record with 204 career ground balls and is second with 31 caused turnovers. McCarthy was named the SCAC Character & Community Male Athlete of the Week last week.
Sims, of North Little Rock, Ark., ranked 15th in the country with a school-record 53 runs scored. He also ranked third in the league with a .493 on-base percentage and was first with seven triples. Sims hit .372 with 14 doubles and 16 stolen bases to earn first team All-SCAC, CoSIDA Academic All-District and d3baseball.com All-West Region Second Team honors.
Casteen, from Burkburnett, Texas, hit .293 with 12 hits, two doubles and seven RBI in just 41 at bats. She was also perfect in the field on 57 attempts. Casteen represented Hendrix at the 2012 NCAA Convention in January.
The SCAC places a special emphasis on sportsmanship each year – asking all fans of the conference to exhibit good sportsmanship at all conference functions throughout the 2011-2012 season.
