SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Hendrix College women's basketball finally earned their first victory of the season, defeating Sewanee – The University of the South 60-49 in Southern Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon.
The host Tigers (5-12, 0-8) led 28-27 at halftime and took a 31-28 lead just 1:13 into the second period. The Warriors (1-18, 1-7) answered with a 20-3 run over the next nine minutes to take control of the game with a 48-34 lead with 9:45 to play. Hendrix would lead by as many as 16 in the second half.
Hendrix made a season-best nine three-pointers out of 21 attempts (43 percent) and 39 percent (24-of-61) from the field. Sewanee shot 31 percent (16-of-51) and went 9-of-25 from outside. The Warriors outrebounded the Tigers 45-30.
Freshman guard
Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler paced Hendrix with 16 points, hitting four long-range shots, to go with five assists and two steals. Sophomore forward
Lindsay Drillette came off the bench to scored 12 points and dish out three assists. Junior center
Jamie Tate scored nine points and pulled down 15 rebounds and freshman guard
Estrella Flores knocked down a trio of three-pointers for nine points to go with three assists.
Sewanee's Paige Lowe made seven three-pointers en route to 23 points. Jamie Chauvin had 13 points and seven rebounds and Kayla Sweell recorded five points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals.
The Warriors will take on Birmingham-Southern College for another road conference game on Friday.
