Warriors Fall in Extras to the Cru

Junior pitcher Jacob Perschke fanned 13 batters in a no decision on Friday

BELTON, Texas – The Hendrix College baseball team suffered their first loss of the year, a 2-1, 10-inning defeat at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday night. Junior hurler Jacob Perschke struck out the third most batters in school history, fanning 13, and allowed seven hits and one run in nine innings of no decision work for the Warriors (2-1).

The Cru (1-1) picked up the run in the bottom of the first when designated hitter Zack Whiddon led off with a base hit and later scored on a Seth Mogavero single through the left side. The game remained scoreless until Hendrix junior center fielder Collin Radack led the top of the sixth with a double and moved to third on a ground out off the bat of sophomore third baseman Brady Newville. Sophomore right fielder Matt Simmons plated Radack with another ground ball, tying the game at 1-1.

The Warriors had a chance in the top of the 10th when Radack reached on a fielder's choice and Newville singled him over to second with one out. Simmons' ground ball forced Newville out at second, setting up runners at the corners with two outs. UMHB pitcher Ian Ekery caught Simmons off of first and after a rundown, Radack was tagged out trying to score the go-ahead run, ending the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, pinch hitter Chase Burrow singled off of Warrior sophomore reliever Cannon Schrank. Burrow moved to second on a wild pitch and with one out, scored on a Whiddon hit up the middle.

Radack and Newville registered two hits each of the Warriors. Whiddon went 3-for-5 to lead the Cru.

Schrank (0-1) took the loss in his season debut for the Warriors. Ekery earned the win, allowing three hits and striking out two in 3.1 innings of relief. UMHB starter Kreece Cooper lasted six innings, giving up three hits, one run, three walks and six strikeouts.

The Warriors and Cru will wrap up their series with a double-header Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
