Majors Complete Sweep of Warriors

JACKSON, Miss. – The Hendrix College baseball team dropped the final game of a three game Southern Athletic Association series at Millsaps College 11-8 on Sunday afternoon. The host Majors (10-3, 3-0) complete the sweep of the Warriors (5-11, 1-5) after scoring four runs in the eighth inning to overcome a one-run deficit.

Millsaps opened the scoring with a five-run second inning, which included a three-run homer by third baseman Keith Shumaker. Hendrix answered with a four runs in the top of the third. With two outs, junior designated hitter Jacob Perschke singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore second baseman Ryan Ritz  then reached on error and junior first baseman Thomas Weber singled to load the bases. Sophomore right fielder Matt Simmons knocked in Perschke on a hit, then sophomore catcher Seth Mobley drew a bases loaded walk, plating Ritz. Weber and Simmons scored on another error, cutting the lead to 5-4.

The Warriors took an 8-5 lead in the top of the fifth when Ritz led off with a walk and scored on a double by Weber. Simmons followed with a base hit and Mobley reached on an error that allowed Weber to cross the plate. Sophomore third baseman Brady Newville was then hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Simmons scored on an RBI-ground out by junior left fielder Austin Womack. Freshman shortstop Brandon Smith drove in Mobley with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Majors scored one in the bottom of the fifth and designated hitter Wes Perkins hit a solo home run in the sixth to make the game 8-7 in the Warriors' favor.

In the eighth, Millsaps scored four times on six hits, including an RBI single by Perkins, a two-run single from shortstop Samuel Doucet and a sacrifice fly from second baseman Kevin Wall.

Simmons recorded three hits and scored twice for Hendrix. Weber had two hits, including a double, and two runs scored and Newville hit a triple. Perkins and Wall had three hits each for Millsaps.

Major reliever Harper Grier (4-0) earned the win, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two strikeouts. Warrior freshman reliever Daniel Imbro (1-1) allowed seven hits and five runs in 3.1 innings in the losing effort.

Hendrix will host UT Tyler at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
