Hendrix Wins Two from Centre to Open SAA Slate

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Hendrix College softball team opened their Southern Athletic Association schedule with a double-header sweep at Centre College on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors (6-2, 2-0) took the first game from the Colonels (1-3, 0-2) 4-2, then won the nightcap 5-1.

In the opener, Hendrix scored three times in the top of the second. With two outs, senior center fielder Sydney Copeland singles and junior second baseman Catelyn Gibbs followed with a RBI-double. Junior left fielder Tiffany Hubbard plated Gibbs with a base hit, and sophomore shortstop Michaela Larabee drove in Hubbard with another single.

Centre got a two-run single from left fielder Alisha Russell in the fifth to make the game 3-2. The Warriors added an insurance run in the seventh when Larabee walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman catcher Jill Sikes.

Larabee, first baseman Shelby Anderson and right fielder Morgan Fires each had two hits for Hendrix. Rusell and catcher Tori Silcox recorded two hits each for Centre.

Warrior senior pitcher Ashley Halbert (3-2) struck out nine, giving up seven hits and two runs in seven innings to earn the win. Emily Meador (0-2) allowed 11 hits, four runs and walk with four strikeouts for the Colonels.

Hubbard led the second game off with a double and scored on an Anderson base hit. In the third inning, Hendrix took advantage of three hits and three Centre errors, scoring three times, taking a 4-0 lead.

Colonel third baseman Christina Schwarz drove in Ashley Christian with a base hit in the fifth. The Warriors added a final run in the sixth when Copeland led off with a walk and scored on a Larabee double.

Sophomore Lauren Whitby (2-0) earned her second win of the year, fanning three and allowing seven hits, one run and a walk. Shawnee Shuler (1-1) struck out seven, but took the loss by giving up four hits, two earned runs and four walks and 5.2 innings.

Hendrix will try to complete the sweep of Centre with another double-header on Sunday.
