CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – The Hendrix College softball team split a double-header with the University of the Ozarks at Hurie Field on Tuesday afternoon. The host Lady Eagles (7-9) took the first game 4-0, but the Warriors (8-4) rebounded to win the nightcap 16-5.
In the second game, Hendrix outhit Ozarks 13-9. The Warriors put up a four-run second inning with a two run-double from junior second baseman
Catelyn Gibbs and an RBI-single from sophomore right fielder
Morgan Fires. Gibbs also scored on an error.
The Lady Eagles cut the deficit to 4-2 on three hits in the fourth inning, then the Warriors went up 8-2 after a three-home run over the left field fence by senior third baseman
Paula Burr. Hendrix tacked on five more runs in the sixth. Sophomore shortstop
Michaela Larabee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the first run, then freshman catcher
Jill Sikes hit a two-run base hit. Burr followed with a two-run double.
Ozarks avoided the run rule with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, making the game 12-5. Hendrix added four more in the seventh, including a two-run double from Sikes.
For the game, Burr drove in five runs and tallied six total bases on the home run and double. Sikes had two hits and four driven in and Larabee scored three times. Junior left fielder
Tiffany Hubbard also had three hits and scored twice and freshman first baseman
Shelby Anderson crossed the plate three times as well. Freshman pitcher
Kayla Patton went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Patton (2-0) picked up the win by fanning three and giving up eight hits, four earned runs and a walk in 5.1 innings. Sophomore
Lauren Whitby closed the game with one strike and allowing one hit in 1.2 innings. Lady Eagle Whitney Price (1-4) lasted 5.1 innings, giving up eight hits, eight earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
In the opener, Ozarks pitcher Amber Rollins (5-3) threw a three-hit, three-walk, six-strikeout shutout.
The Lady Eagles scored two runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth, on a two-run single by third baseman Shawnee Sorensen.
Sorensen drove in three of Ozarks' four runs with two hits. For Hendrix, Gibbs went 2-for-2 and recorded a sacrifice bunt, giving her the Hendrix career record with 26.
Senior pitcher
Ashley Halbert (4-3) allowed nine hits, three earned runs and struck out four over six innings in the losing effort.
Hendrix will travel to Austin College for a double-header on Sunday in Sherman, Texas.
