Hendrix Erases 5-Run Deficit to Win Series

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Hendrix College baseball team pounded out a season-high 17 hits and erased an early 5-0 deficit to top Centre College 13-6 at Gary Wright Field on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors (7-13, 3-6) took two of the three games in the Southern Athletic Association series against the host Colonels (8-6, 3-3).

Centre went up 2-0 on three hits in the bottom of the first, then scored three unearned runs after three hits and a pair of errors to take a 5-0 advantage through two innings.

Hendrix went on to score 13 of the next 14 runs, beginning in the fifth inning. Junior left fielder Austin Womack singled and stole second and was knocked in by sophomore shortstop Ryan Ritz' base-hit.

The Warriors exploded for eight runs on eight hits and four errors, while sending 12 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Brady Newville recorded four runs batted in on a pair of doubles in the frame, including a bases loaded and clearing two-bagger that put Hendrix up 9-5. Ritz and freshman second baseman Charlie St. Clair also drove in runs in the sixth.

The Colonels made the game 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth when right fielder Kyle Cook doubled in shortstop Aaron Ammann who also doubled.

In the top of the seventh, St. Clair led off with a walk and later scored on a base hit by freshman center fielder Zach Crenshaw. Hendrix added three more runs in the eighth. Junior first baseman Thomas Weber and sophomore right fielder Matt Simmons led off with back-to-back singles, then Newville plated Weber with a base-hit. After a wild pitch, Simmons scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore John Pounds. St. Clair singled and the Colonels committed an error on the play, allowing Newville to score.

Six different Warriors had multiple hits. Newville went 3-for-5 with five RBI and a pair of doubles. Simmons had three hits, including a double, and scored three times. Ritz also had three hits and two driven in. Crenshaw and St. Clair both had two hits and Womack had a pair of base hits and two stolen bases.

Cook led Centre at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles. Center fielder Jake Johnson had two hits and designated hitter Michael Oaks had two hits and two drive in.

Freshman reliever Daniel Imbro (2-1) earned the win, striking out three and allowing just five hits, one run and a walk in 6.1 innings for Hendrix. Centre starter Tommy Munoz (1-2) took the loss, giving up nine hits, six runs, a walk and two strikeouts.

Hendrix will return home for a double-header against Rust College beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
