SHERMAN, Texas – The Hendrix College softball team split a double-header at Austin College at Old Settlers Park on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors (9-5) took the first game 5-3, but the host Kangaroos (3-15) won the nightcap 8-6 on a walk-off home run.
In game one, Austin took an early 3-0 lead after two innings. They scored two runs on two hits in the first inning, and another run on a Breanna Hernandez base hit in the second.

Paula Burr led the fourth off with a base hit and later scored on a single by sophomore right fielder
Morgan Fires. The Warriors took the lead with three runs in the sixth. Fires led off by reaching on an error, sophomore pinch hitter

Sydney Copeland also reached on error to load the bases with no outs. Junior second baseman
Catelyn Gibbs grounded out, scoring Fires. Junior left fielder
Tiffany Hubbard singled, plating Havens and sophomore shortstop
Michaela Larabee drove in Copeland with a base hit.
Hendrix added one more run in the seventh when sophomore
Lauren Whitby was hit by a pitch and later scored on Gibbs base hit.
Four different Warriors had two hits each – Hubbard, Larabee, Burr and Gibbs. Hubbard also stole two bases. Hernandez, second baseman Jessica Baker and shortstop Chelsea Delaney had two hits apiece for the 'Roos.
Whitby (3-1) earned the win for Hendrix, striking out for and allowing seven hits, three runs and four walks. Sophia Hernandez (2-5) took the loss, giving up 11 hits, one earned run and a walk in six innings.
In the second game, the Warriors overcame a 5-1 deficit, but could not hold on to the lead.
First baseman Heather Farquhar and catcher Mallory Rossman each had RBI-doubles in the first to put Austin up 2-0. Baker had a two-run double in the second to make the game 4-0. Hendrix scored in the top of the foruth when Burr led off with a walk and was knocked in on a Copeland single. Farquhar drove in Baker on a base hit in the bottom of the fourth to give the 'Roos a 5-1 advantage.
The Warriors took a 6-5 lead with five runs in the top of the seventh. Gibbs led off with a base hit and scored on a Hubbard double. After Larabee struck out, freshman first baseman
Shelby Anderson plated Hubbard with a single. With two outs and Anderson on first, freshman catcher
Jill Sikes singled, followed by a base hit from freshman pitcher
Kayla Patton, scoring Anderson. Fires followed with a two-run base hit to take the lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, right fielder Rachel Ramos singled, followed by a Baker double to put two runners on. Sophia Hernandez then hit a three-run homer to win the game for Austin 8-6.
Anderson went 3-for-4 with a double to lead Hendrix at the plate. Copeland, Larabee and Patton each had two hits as well. Baker went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for the 'Roos. Farquhar had three hits and two driven in.
Amber Pemberton (1-3) gained the win, with seven strikeouts, 13 hits, six runs and three walks allowed. Patton (1-1) suffered the loss in relief, giving up 10 hits, four runs a walk and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Hendrix will travel to Shreveport, La. on Monday for a double-header against Centenary College.
