CONWAY, Ark. – After falling in the first game of the series, the Hendrix College baseball team responded with an 8-1 victory over Berry College in Southern Athletic Association action on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors (5-7, 1-1) took advantage of seven Viking (4-6, 1-1) errors and received strong performances on the mound from sophomore
Nick Land and freshman
Daniel Imbro.
Land (2-1) struck out six batters, allowing seven hits, one run and a walk to earn his second victory of the season. Imbro fanned three and allowed just one walk in two scoreless innings for his second save of the year. Berry starter Ryan O'Connell (0-2) struck out two and gave up five hits and an earned run, while hitting two in seven innings.
The Warriors went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a pair of errors and two hits. Sophomore right fielder
Matt Simmons picked up a sacrifice fly, scoring designated hitter
Jacob Perschke, and junior first baseman
Thomas Weber hit a double that plated junior center fielder
Collin Radack. Hendrix added another run in the second when sophomore third baseman
Brady Newville led off with a single and later scored on an error.
Radack led off the fifth with a base hit, extending his hitting streak to 17 games and two away from the Hendrix record, and scored on a Weber sac fly, giving the Warriors a 4-0 advantage.
The Vikings scored in the sixth when center fielder Stephen Gaylor singled, stole second was driven in by designated hitter Nick Stidham's base hit.
The Warriors tacked on four more in the eighth on a two-run single from freshman shortstop
Brandon Smith, a RBI single by sophomore
John Pounds and a Radack sac fly.
Freshman left fielder
Zach Crenshaw picked up two hits for the Warriors. Radack and Newville scored twice and Weber and Smith each drove in a pair. Second baseman Austin Neely had two hits for Berry.
Hendrix and Berry will wrap up their series with the rubber match at noon on Sunday.
