CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College baseball evened up the three-game Southern Athletic Association series with a 3-2 victory over Birmingham-Southern College at Bear Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors (10-14, 4-7) gave the Panthers (16-8, 7-1) their first loss in conference play.
The final game of the series is schedule for a noon start at Warrior Field on Sunday.
Hendrix broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth with two outs when junior center fielder
Collin Radack extended his school-record hitting to streak to 23 games with an infield hit. After a walk issued to right fielder
Matt Simmons, junior designated hitter
Jacob Perschke poked a hit into right field, allowing Radack to score.
The Warriors added two more with two outs in the seventh when freshman shortstop
Brandon Smith reached on an error and freshman left fielder
Zach Crenshaw singled. Sophomore first baseman
Ryan Ritz then drew a walk to load the bases, which was followed by a two-run single up the middle by freshman
Charlie St. Clair.
BSC cut the lead to 3-1 in the eighth when right fielder Jacob Mayfield led off with a walk and later scored on a base hit by catcher Tanner McGill. With two outs and a runner on second in the top of the ninth, Hendrix freshman reliever Brandon Imbro issued a walk to shortstop Evan Grovenstein to put two on. Mayfield drove in pinch runner Stephen Denton with a base hit to left field and advanced to second on the throw. With two runners in scoring position, Imbro induced Ethan Netherton to ground out to end the game and earn his third save of the season.
Sophomore starter
Nick Land (3-1) threw seven scoreless innings in the winning effort, allowing just five hits and three walks. Freshman
Kyle Teachout pitched the eighth, before Imbro came in and got the save. Panther hurler Ralls Pennington (1-3) allowed two hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts in five innings in the loss. Reliever Miles Nordgren, who earned the win in Friday's game, allowed three hits, two unearned runs and a walk with four strikeouts in three innings.
The Warriors only had five base hits, with St. Clair, Perschke, Radack, Crenshaw and sophomore catcher
Seth Mobley each getting one. Mayfield and Netherton had two hits each for the Panthers, who left 11 runners on base.
