CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College softball team swept Southern Athletic Association rival Sewanee – University of the South on Saturday for the Warriors' fourth consecutive shutout. Hendrix (15-5, 5-1) won both games in five innings, taking the opener 12-0 and topping the Tigers (5-7, 0-6) 14-0 in game two.
With the victories, Hendrix is off to their best start through 20 games in the program's 13-year history.
For the second time in three games, a Warrior pitcher threw a no-hitter. After freshman
Kayla Patton face one batter past the minimum against Rust on Wednesday, senior
Ashley Halbert (7-3) tossed a perfect game in the opener on Saturday, recording three strikeouts. The win was also Halbert's school record 11th shutout of her career.
Hendrix recorded eight hits and took advantage of three Sewanee errors in the game. Senior center fielder
Sydney Copeland had a double and a single and scored twice. Sophomore right fielder
Morgan Fires scored three times and hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Senior third baseman
Paula Burr drove in a pair with a double and sophomore shortstop
Michaela Larabee also knocked in a pair. Junior left fielder
Tiffany Hubbard reached base all four times she was up with a hit, a walk and two hit by pitches. Hubbard also drove in two runs, stole a base and scored twice.
Tiger pitcher Cooper Killen took the loss, allowing eight hits, six earned runs and four walks while striking out two.
In the second game, sophomore
Lauren Whitby (4-1) tossed a six-hit, four-strikeout shutout for the Warriors.
Hendrix scored in every inning, putting up two runs in the first, two in the second, six and the third and four in the fourth. The Warriors had 16 hits, while the Tigers committed four errors.
Patton went 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and five RBI. Hubbard went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman first baseman
Shelby Anderson had two hits, including a double and scored four times, while knocking in one. Halbert and Copeland had two hits and an RBI each. Copeland also stole a base and scored twice. Larabee scored twice and drove in a run. Junior
Taylor Adams and sophomore
Kaitlyn Zamzow recorded pinch hit doubles.
Third baseman Sarah Fleming recorded two hits for Sewanee. First baseman Sara Burklin had a double.
Pitcher Sarah Anne Hamilton took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs and walking two.
Hendrix and Sewanee will wrap the series up with a double-header beginning at noon on Sunday.
