BSC Takes Series Finale from Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College lost the series finale 5-2 to Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday afternoon at Bear Stadium, allowing the Panthers to win two of the three Southern Athletic Association contests.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 17-8 overall and 8-1 in league play, while the Warriors fall to 10-15 and 4-8.

Hendrix took a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore first baseman Ryan Ritz led off with a single, stole second and scored on a base hit through the right side of the infield by sophomore right fielder Matt Simmons. The Warriors added another run in the third when junior center fielder Collin Radack tripled, extending his school-record hitting streak to 24 games, and was drive in on a Simmons sacrifice fly.

BSC cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth when right fielder Jacob Mayfield hit an infield single, stole second and scored on a base hit to center field by left fielder Ethan Netherton. The Panthers went up 4-2 after a three-run sixth inning on two hits, two hit batters, two walks and an error.

Birmingham-Southern added a final run in the seventh when pinch hitter Zach Wagner walked with the bases loaded.

Simmons led Hendrix at the plate with two hits, including a double and two RBI. Mayfield and catcher Tanner McGill had two hits each for BSC. Five different players recorded RBI for the Panthers.

BSC starter Evan Grovenstein (2-1) earned the win, allowing four hits, two runs, a walk and striking out two in five innings. David Bourbonnais threw two scoreless innings and relief and Blake Yance walked just one in two scoreless innings for his sixth save of the year.

Hendrix junior Jacob Perschke struck out seven in six innings, but gave up five hits, three earned runs, a walk and hit two. Sophomore lefty Cannon Schrank allowed one walk and struck out two in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Warriors will host the University of the Ozarks at Warrior Field on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
