Smoyer, Imbro Pitch Warriors to Sweep of Tigers

CONWAY, Ark. - Senior Ted Smoyer and freshman Daniel Imbro each pitched a complete game on Friday as the Hendrix College baseball team swept Sewanee - University of the South in a Southern Athletic Association double-header on Friday afternoon. Smoyer threw a nine-inning shutout, striking out seven as the Warriors (14-15, 6-8) took game one 5-0. Imbro allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings in a 5-1 victory over the Tigers (6-16, 0-11) in the nightcap.

Hendrix and Sewanee will wrap the series up with a single game at noon on Saturday at Warrior Field.

In the opener, the Warriors scored in the second inning when sophomore third baseman Brady Newville was a hit by a pitch and later scored on a base hit from freshman shortstop Brandon Smith. They added three runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore right fielder Matt Simmons led off with a single and later scored on a ground ball from sophomore catcher Seth Mobley. Freshman left fielder Zach Crenshaw drove in John Pounds, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Mobley to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead. Hendrix added one more run in the sixth after two hits and an error.

Freshman shortstop Brandon Smith had two hits for Hendrix, including a double, and stole a base. Crenshaw drove in two runs, scored and stole a base.

Smoyer (3-2) allowed just five hits and a walk to earn his second career shutout. Sewanee starter Worth Osgood (2-4) went seven innings, giving up seven hits, four earned runs and three walks to go with three strikeouts.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the nightcap when center fielder James Snover led off with a base hit and scored on a Michael Walker hit. The Warriors tied it in the bottom of the frame when freshman second baseman Charlie St. Clair singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Simmons base hit.

The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Hendrix scored three runs on five hits. Junior center fielder Collin Radack drove in a run and Newville knocked in two on base hits in the inning. Smith singled to start the sixth, stole second and scored on a base hit from sophomore first baseman Ryan Ritz for the final run of the game.

Ritz, St. Clair, Simmons, Newville and junior designated hitter had two hits apiece for the Warriors. Radack's hit extended his nation-leading hitting streak to 28 games.

Imbro (3-1), making his first start of the season, struck out two, while allowing just one run and two walks. Tiger starter Jacob Simpson (3-5) took the loss, giving up 12 hits, five runs, a walk and two strikeouts.
