Majors Take Series Opener with Big Inning

JACKSON, Miss. -  The Hendrix College baseball lost the first contest of a three-game Southern Athletic Association series 12-3 to Millsaps College at Twenty Field on Friday night. The host Majors (8-3, 1-0) broke open a one-run game by scoring six times in the bottom of the seventh.

The Warriors (5-9, 1-3) got on the board in the top of the first when freshman center fielder Zach Crenshaw led off with a walk and scored on a double by junior first baseman Thomas Weber.  Millsaps shortstop Samuel Doucet drove in Stephen Gates in the bottom of the frame to tie it up. Doucet knocked in another run with a double in the third inning to go up 2-1.

Crenshaw walked and later scored on a Ryan Ritz ground ball in the top of the fifth to tie the game. The Majors scored two in the fifth after a hit batter, a walk and an error. Crenshaw scored his third run of the game in the seventh after singling and being knocked in by a base hit from right fielder Matt Simmons.

The Majors scored six runs on six hits and an error in the seventh on the Warrior bullpen to gain a 10-3 lead. Catcher Wes Perkins hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eight for the final runs of the game.

Crenshaw had two hits, two walks and three runs to lead Hendrix as the plate. Simmons also had two hits. Doucet went 3-for-4 with three RBI for Millsaps. Perkins scored three times with two hits and third baseman Keith Shumaker crossed the plate four times.

Will Edwards (3-0) earned the win for the Majors, striking out eight and giving up six hits, two runs and three walks over six innings. Hendrix junior starter Jacob Perschke (1-3) lasted six innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out.

The Warriors and Majors will play the second game of the series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
