Ted Smoyer and freshman
Daniel Imbro combined to allow just six hits en route to a 5-0 victory for Hendrix College over Rhodes College in Southern Athletic Association competition at Warrior Field Friday night.
The blanking was the school record fourth shutout of the season for the Warriors (16-17, 7-8). Smoyer (5-2) went eight innings, allowing five hits, two walks and fanning three. Imbro allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth to close the game. Jackson Baker (6-4) allowed 10 hits, four earned runs, three walks and struck out eight in 7.2 innings for the Lynx (17-16, 8-6).
Hendrix went up 2-0 in the first when sophomore first baseman
Ryan Ritz led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Freshman second baseman
Charlie St. Clair followed with a walk, and Ritz scored on
Collin Radack's fielder's choice, that put St. Clair out at second. Radack stole second and reached third on an error, then scored on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore right fielder
Matt Simmons.
In the bottom of the third, junior left fielder
Austin Womack led off with a base hit, moved to second on a passed ball and later scored from third on a base hit by St. Clair. The Warriors added two more in the eighth on RBI-singles from junior designated hitter
Thomas Weber and sophomore third baseman
Brady Newville.
St. Clair, Newville and Womack each had two hits for Hendrix. Simmons had the only extra base hit of the evening with a double. Rhodes center fielder Walker McWherter had two hits, including a double.
The Warriors and Lynx will continue the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
