Rhodes Sweeps Hendrix to Open Series

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Hendrix College softball team lost both games of a Southern Athletic Association double-header to Rhodes College on Saturday. The host Lynx (18-12, 12-5) took the first game 4-3, then they shutout the Warriors (19-13, 8-8) 4-0.

In the opener, Rhodes plated two on three hits and an error in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Makenzie Martin and left fielder Allycia Kleine both had a RBI in the frame. The Warriors took a 4-3 lead in the second. Senior pitcher Ashley Halbert led off with a double and was bunted over by senior third baseman Paula Burr. Freshman Shelby Anderson reached on error and drove in Halbert for the first run. Sophomore right fielder Morgan Fires followed by reaching third on error, allowing Anderson to tie the game. Senior center fielder Sydney Copeland bunted Fires in with a sacrifice for the go-ahead run.

The Lynx tied the game in the third on a Jessica Brown solo home run. Catcher Courtney Williams hit a game-winning solo homer in the fourth inning.

Junior second baseman Catelyn Gibbs went 3-for-3 with two doubles for the Warriors. First Baseman Rachel Pewitt had two hits for the Lynx.

Chloe Hundman (8-7) earned the win, allowing three hits and one earned run over four innings. Forrest Skelton allowed two hits and a walk while striking four in a three-inning save. Halbert (8-9) allowed eight hits, three earned runs, a walk and struck out one in six innings.

Skelton (10-5) limited the Hendrix offense to just four hits and two walks while striking out seven in game two. Sophomore Lauren Whitby (5-3) gave up 12 hits, four runs, two walks and struck out one in the losing effort.

Rhodes scored all four runs in the second inning. Skelton drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run and second baseman Katie Stich had a two-run single in the inning.

Stich and Williams both had three hits each for the Lynx. Warrior sophomore shortstop Michaela Larabee went 3-for-3 and Gibbs had the other hit.

Hendrix and Rhodes will wrap the series with a noon double-header on Sunday.
