Hendrix Splits With Millsaps on Wild Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. – In a pair of high-scoring games, the Hendrix College softball team split with Millsaps College on the final day of the Southern Athletic Association regular season finale Sunday. The Warriors (21-17, 10-12) took the first game 11-1 in five innings, but the Majors (20-19, 11-13) responded to win the second game 12-10.

Millsaps earned the fourth seed at next weekend's SAA Tournament in Danville, Ky. Hendrix will be either the #5 seed or #6 seed, depending on the outcome of Sunday's games between Centre and Sewanee.

In game one, the Majors scored the first run of the game in the first, but the Warriors answered with five runs in the fifth, four in the third and two in the fourth.

Junior second baseman Catelyn Gibbs hit a three-run homer for Hendrix in the third inning, the first of her career. Gibbs also scored twice during the game. Senior pitcher Ashley Halbert recorded a pair of doubles and freshman catcher Jill Sikes had two hits, two RBI and a stolen base. Junior left fielder Tiffany Hubbard had a double, a single, scored and knocked a run in. Senior center fielder Sydney Copeland also had two hits, two RBI, two runs and a steal.

Katie Birdwell had two hits for Millsaps.

Halbert earned the win, allowing four hits, one run and a strikeout in five innings. Molly Tyner (6-12) allowed six hits, six runs and a walk in 3.2 innings for the loss.

In game two, Hendrix scored in the top of the first when Gibbs walked and later scored on a Halbert single. Millsaps answered with three runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the frame.

The Warriors regained a 4-3 lead in the third on three hits and an error. They went up 6-3 with two more runs in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Majors sent 14 batters to plate, scoring nine times on eight hits and two errors to go up 12-6.

Hendrix fought back with four runs on five hits in the sixth, but could not overcome the large deficit.

Halbert went 3-for-4 with two RBI and freshman first baseman Shelby Anderson had two hits, two runs scored and two driven in. Sophomore shortstop Michaela Larabee recorded two hits, three runs, a RBI and stole a base. Gibbs also had two hits and two runs scored.

Six differ Millsaps players had two hits each. Catcher Savannah Harvard drove in three runs, and four others had two RBI apiece.

Pitcher Emily Collins (7-4) earned the win, allowing 11 hits, three earned runs and four walks in seven innings. Halbert (10-11) pitched three plus innings, allowing 10 hits, eight runs and two walks for the loss.
