Warriors Open SAA Tourney With 6-2 Win

JACKSON, Miss. – The Hendrix College baseball team opened the 2013 Southern Athletic Association Tournament with a 6-2 win over Oglethorpe University at Twenty Field on Friday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Warriors (20-20) will face the winner between #1 Millsaps and #8 Sewanee at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Hendrix broke open a scoreless game with a three-run fourth inning. With one out, junior first baseman Thomas Weber walked, sophomore right fielder Matt Simmons reached on an error and sophomore third baseman Brady Newville walked to load the bases. Junior designated hitter Jacob Perschke drove in Weber and Simmons with a double, and Newville also scored after an errant throw by the Stormy Petrel (14-27) left fielder Will Hanna.

The Warriors added three more in the seventh on an RBI-single by freshman second baseman Charlie St. Clair and an error that lead to two runs scoring off of Simmons' bat.

Sixth-seeded OU scored in the eighth when Cory Leff doubled in catcher Jeff Brothers. They tacked on one more in the ninth on a RBI-single from right fielder Nick Manai.

Sophomore shortstop Ryan Ritz led Hendrix with three hits. St. Clair had two hits and drove in one. Weber was 0-for-2 but was walked three times and scored once. Perschke had two RBI and Simmons had one. Manai and Hanna had two hits each for the Petrels.

Warrior senior Ted Smoyer (6-3) went the distance on the mound, allowing nine hits, two runs and a walk while striking out six. Leff (2-6) lasted four innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs and three walks in the losing effort.
