DANVILLE, Ky. – Playing in their first elimination game of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament, the Hendrix College softball team survived by shutting out Sewanee – University of the South 8-0 in six innings on Saturday morning.
With the win, the sixth-seeded Warriors (22-18) will play another elimination game against #1 Berry at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Sophomore pitcher
Lauren Whitby (6-2) struck out four and gave up six hits and a walk in Hendrix' ninth shutout of the year. Cooper Killen (3-14) allowed 10 hits, eight runs, three walks and struck out two for the seventh-seed Tigers (5-29).
The Warriors plated two in the first when junior second baseman
Catelyn Gibbs led off by being hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Freshman designated player
Jill Sikes followed with a walk and stole second. Freshman first baseman
Shelby Anderson drove both in with single down the left field line.
Whitby walked to lead off the second and scored on a Gibbs double to left center. Sophomore shortstop
Michaela Larabee followed with a base hit, scoring Gibbs to give Hendrix a 4-0 lead. Senior third baseman
Ashley Halbert drove in Gibbs in the fourth inning on a base hit.
In the sixth, Gibbs walked and Sikes singled before Halbert ended the game via run-rule with a three-run home run over the left field fence.
Gibbs scored four times, the second most in school history, and had two hits and two steals. Halbert had two hits and four RBI and Sikes had two hits and two runs scored.
