CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College baseball team split a non-conference double-header with Emory University on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. The Warriors (15-16) took the first game 2-1, but the Eagles (14-13) won the nightcap 11-4.
In game one, senior hurler
Ted Smoyer (4-2) went eight innings, allowing just three hits, one run and a walk to go with six strikeouts to get the win. Junior
Jacob Perschke picked up his first save of the year, by throwing a scoreless ninth. Reliver Matt McMahon (2-3) threw three innings out of the bullpen, allowing a hit, a run, three walks and two strikes for the loss. Starter Tyler Sprague went five frames, giving up seven hits, a run, a two walks and one strikeout.
Emory scored the first run of the game in the third when shortstop Jared Kahn singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by catcher Jared Welch. Hendrix scored in the fourth when sophomore right fielder
Matt Simmons singled and later scored on a base hit by sophomore third baseman
Brady Newville.
The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the eight. Junior center fielder
Collin Radack drew a walk and stole second, Simmons singled and Newville walked, bringing pinch hitter Perschke up with the bases loaded and two outs. Perschke walked, scoring Radack from third for the game-winning run.
Simmons went 2-for-4 for the Warriors. Radack drew two walks, but went 0-for-2, ending his nation-leading hitting streak at 28 games. Center fielder Wes Peacock had two hits and a stolen base for the Eagles. Kahn was 1-for-1 with a run scored, a sac bunt, two stolen bases and was hit by a pitch twice.
In game two, Hendrix went up 2-0 in the first on Newville and
Seth Mobley RBI-singles. Left fielder Daniel Iturrey led off the second with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Peacock ground ball to make the game 2-1.
Emory went up 4-2 in the third with three runs on four hits. Third baseman Ryan Toscano drove in Chris Brown with a sac fly in the fourth to give the Eagles a 5-2 advantage. Warrior freshman left fielder
Zach Crenshaw was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fourth and later scored on a
Charlie St. Clair sacrifice fly to make the game 5-3.
Emory answered with two runs in the fifth to go up 7-3. Mobley singled, moved to third on a
Brandon Smith doubled and scored on a sac fly from Crenshaw in the fifth. Kahn had a two-run triple as part of a three-run sixth inning and the Eagles tacked on another run in the seventh for the 11-4 final.
Mobley went 3-for-3 for the Warriors and St. Clair was 2-for-2. Kahn was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Iturrey and Toscano had two hits each.
Eagle starter Paul Merolla (3-1) earned the win, going five innings and giving up nine hits, four runs two walks and a strikeout. Freshman
Daniel Imbro took the loss, allowing five hits, three earned runs and striking out two in a three-inning start.
Hendrix and Emory will wrap the game on Sunday with a single-game at noon.
