CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College softball team lost both games of a Southern Athletic Association double-header to Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (22-10, 13-3) took the first game 2-1, then downed the Warriors (18-10, 8-6) 7-4.

After the games – Hendrix honored the 2013 class of seniors – pitcher/infielder Ashley Halbert, third baseman Paula Burr and center fielder Sydney Copeland.

In game one,  BSC took a 1-0 lead in the second when pitcher Bethany Fronk led off with a double and scored on a base hit up the middle by left fielder Joanna Jernigan. Katelyn Murray, who followed Fronk with a base hit, also tried to scored but was gunned out at the plate by Copeland.

The Panthers scored again in the fourth when Murray singled and later scored on a ground out by second baseman Chelsea Fernandez. The Warriors scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth when Copeland doubles and scored on a base hit to center field by junior left fielder Tiffany Hubbard.

Hubbard, Copeland and sophomore shortstop Michaela Larabee each had two hits for Hendrix. Shortstop Taylor Bassett hit a double and triple for BSC. Fronk and Murray added two hits apiece.

Fronk allowed seven hits and one run and struck out one to get the win. Halbert (8-7) allowed nine hits, two runs and struck out one in the losing effort.

In the nightcap, the Panthers plated three runs in the top of the first with RBI doubles from Bassett and Murray and a run-scoring single by Alyssa Statham. The Warriors answered with three runs of their own in the first. Hubbard led off with a base hit and scored on a Halbert double. Burr drove in Halbert with a double of her won and junior catcher DJ Sandidge knocked in Burr with a base hit.

BSC went up 4-3 in the third when Bassett led off with a solo home run, her third of the weekend. Hendrix tied it back up in the same inning when Larabee singled and scored on a Halbert double to left field.

The Panthers finally gained the advantage with three runs in the sixth. Jernigan had a RBI double and Statham doubled in two more in the inning.

Larabee went 3-for-4 for the Warriors. Halbert had a pair of doubles, two RBI and two walks. Bassett was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two driven in. Statham had two hits and three RBI.

Fronk (17-8) won her second game of the day, allowing 10 hits, four runs, two walks and fanning one. Hendrix sophomore Lauren Whitby (5-2) allowed 12 hits, seven runs, three walks and struck out one in the loss.

Hendrix will play their final home games of the year on Tuesday when they host the University of the Ozarks for a 5 p.m. double-header.
