FRISCO, Texas - The Hendrix College baseball team lost a pair of games to teams from the Lone Star state at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors (0-4) lost to Hardin-Simmons University (2-1) 5-4 in the first game, then fell to the University of Texas at Dallas (3-0) 7-1.
In game one, the Cowboys scored a run in the top of the second, but the Warriors took advantage of a pair of errors in the fourth, which led to freshmen
Spencer Summers and
Logan Hiatt knocking in senior
Jacob Perschke and junior
Matt Simmons, respectively.
Perschke singled, moved to second on a Simmons walk and scored on a pair of wild pitches to give Hendrix a 3-1 lead in the sixth.
HSU plated four runs on four hits, including a two-run single by Brandon Walker, to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the ninth, junior catcher
Seth Mobley led off with a single and was lifted for senior pinch runner
Austin Womack. After two pop up outs, Womack stole second and scored on a base hit to left field by senior center fielder
Collin Radack. Junior shortstop
Ryan Ritz drew a walk, but reliever Blake Northrop struck out senior first baseman
Thomas Weber to end the game.
Perschke went 2-for-4 for the Warriors at the plate. Center fielder Jason Vause had a pair of singles for the Cowboys.
Matt Rhodes allowed five hits, one earned run, two walks and fanned five in 5.2 innings for HSU. Jeremy Hallmark (1-0) picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Northrop struck out two for the two-inning save. Hendrix freshman left-hander
Colten Poellinger struck out five and allowed two hits, one run and three walks in his collegiate debut. Junior
Nick Land (0-1) took the loss with three strikeouts, four hits, four runs and a walk in four innings. Senior
Justin Mosbey allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth.
Against the Comets, Radack led off with an infield single, stole second, was bunted over by Ritz and scored on a
Wyatt Hogan ground ball to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. UTD tied the game in the third on a double from shortstop Jimmy Norris. They added four in the fifth inning, including a two-run double from Nick Marti to go up 5-1. They tacked on single runs in the sixth and the eighth as well.
Radack went 2-for-4 with two steals and Perschke hit a double for Hendrix. Marti had two hits and two RBI for UTD. Donovan Vess and Pierce Fly each scored twice.
Comet starter Calvin Campbell (1-0) earned the win by going seven innings, giving up five hits, one run, one walk and three strikeouts. Weber (0-1) allowed four hits, five runs, three walks and struck out one in the 4.2 inning losing effort.
Hendrix will travel to the University of the Ozarks for a Tuesday afternoon game.
