SHERMAN, Texas - The Hendrix College softball loss both games of a double-header to Austin College to open the 2014 season. The Warriors (0-2) fell to the 'Roos (4-3) 9-8 in game one, then lost 8-7 in the nightcap.
In the opener, Hendrix used three runs in the first and four in the third to build an early 7-1 lead. After scoring one in the third, Austin used a seven-run fifth to take a 9-7 lead. Pitcher Sophia Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the inning for the 'Roos.

Fires led the Warriors at the plate with three hits and three RBI. Sophomore first baseman
Shelby Anderson went 2-for-3 with two runs, two driven in and a stolen base. Junior third baseman Katy Havens scored twice.
Left fielder Rachel Ramos went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the 'Roos.
Hernandez (2-1) earned the win with three strikeouts and nine hits, three earned runs and two walks allowed. Freshman
Hope Resor (0-1) gave up 10 hits, four earned runs, and three walks with two strikeouts in six innings in the losing effort.
In the second game, junior shortstop
Michaela Larabee singled and was driven in by Anderson in the top of the first. Austin responded with three runs on a two-run blast from Hernandez and a solo shot by second baseman Hailey Clendennen. The 'Ross tacked one more run in the second to lead 4-1.
The Warriors tied the game in the top of the fifth when senior left fielder
Catelyn Gibbs singled and was bunted over by freshman second baseman
Victoria Hughes. Gibbs scored on a Larabee base hit, which was followed by a two-run homer to center field by Anderson.
Austin scored two runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth to regain a 6-4 advantage. Hughes hit a three-run triple in the top of the sixth to give Hendrix a 7-6 lead. The 'Roos managed to tie the game in the bottom of the inning when pinch runner Lindsey Pollard scored from third on a sac bunt by catcher Mallory Rossmann.
Austin pulled off their second win of the day when third baseman Briana Hernandez led the bottom of the seventh with walk, moved to third on a base hit from Emily Low and scored on a Mary Whitworth single.
Larabee went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a RBI for the Warriors. Anderson had two hits, including the home run, and drove in three. Hughes had a triple and three RBI and freshman catcher
Amanda Riley recorded a double and a single.
Whitworth went 3-for-4 with a double for the 'Ross and Sophia Hernandez had two hits and three RBI.
Victoria Herrera (2-1) won the game for Austin with eight strikeouts and allowing 12 hits and four earned runs. Sophomore
Kayla Patton (0-1) took the loss by giving up 13 hits, six earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Hendrix will take on the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas in a double-header on Sunday.
