SEWANEE, Tenn. - Despite trailing for just over 37 minutes, the Hendrix College women's basketball team came back to defeat Sewanee - The University of the South 58-55 at Juhan Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Warriors improve to 12-13 overall and finish the Southern Athletic Association schedule with a 6-8 record, tying for fourth place with Berry and Birmingham-Southern. Due to tiebreaker rules, Hendrix will be the sixth seed at the SAA Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. and face third-seed Centre at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers fall to 9-16 and 2-12 and will be the eighth seed in the tourney.
Warrior sophomore
Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler made a three-pointer 12 seconds into the game, which was answered with a three-pointer by Clarissa Medley. After a
Jamie Tate free throw, Sewanee forward Kayla Sewell hit a jumper at the 18:04 mark of the first half to go up 4-3 and the Tigers led until the Warriors tied the game at 49-49 with 4:54 to play in the game.
Sewanee went back up 55-51 after a pair of Jamie Chauvin free throws with 2:28 remaining. A three-pointer by freshman guard
Taylor Neal made the game 55-54 with 2:13 to play. After several missed chances on both ends, Hendrix took their first lead since early in the first half when Tate hit a bucket with 27 seconds left. After a missed jumper by Casey Hassett, Warrior sophomore forward
Katy Gallien grabbed the rebound. Kriesel-Bigler sunk a pair of free throws with four seconds left for the final scores of the game.
The Orange & Black shot 31.7 percent (19-of-60) from the field, but hit 11-of-27 three-pointers (40.7 percent), the second most of the season and were 9-of-12 from the free throw line. The Tigers shot 28.6 percent (16-of-56) overall, 4-of-17 from outside and 19-of-26 at the free throw line.
Neal led the Warriors with 20 points and went 6-of-8 from behind the arc. Her 75.0 shooting from outside was tied for the second best percentage in school history. Tate had 12 points, three assists and 22 rebounds, the fourth most boards in program history. It was the sixth time in Tate's career to grab 20 or more rebounds.
Kriesel-Bigler scored 11 points with six assists. Sophomore guard
Estrella Flores had six points off the bench and freshman forward
Anna King added four points and five rebounds.
Paige Lowe led Sewanee with 12 points and Sewell had 11 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and four steals. Chauvin scored 11 points with six rebounds.
