BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Hendrix College baseball lost in 10 innings to #21 Birmingham-Southern College to open a three-game Southern Athletic Association series on Friday night.
The host Panthers (13-3, 6-1) took advantage of an error that allowed David Bourbonnais to reach to lead off the fourth when he was knocked in a base hit by right fielder Jake Campbell for the first run of the game. Catcher Jacob Mayfield singled and later scored on a Bourbonnais sac fly in the fifth to put BSC up 2-0.
Senior center fielder
Collin Radack led the top of the sixth off with an infield single and broke the Hendrix career hits record with 208. The Austin, Texas native then stole second and scored on a base-hit to right field from senior first baseman
Thomas Weber to make the game 2-1.
The Warriors (8-8, 4-3) tied it up in the seventh when freshman third baseman
Spencer Summers led off with a walk, was bunted over by junior catcher
Seth Mobley and scored on a
Wyatt Hogan base knock to center.
Panther left fielder Jeremy Hatley tripled to lead off the bottom of the eighth and was replaced by pinch runner Ethan Netherton. Third baseman Matt Brown followed with a double which plated Netherton for a 3-2 lead.
Junior right fielder
Matt Simmons led the top of the ninth off with a double, was bunted over by Summers and tied the game on a ground out by Mobley which forced extra innings.
Right fielder Zach Wagner led the bottom of the 10th off with a single, moved to second on a balk and scored the game-winning run on a Brow double down the right field line to end the game.
BSC outhit Henrix 11-6 for the game. Simmons' double was the only extra-base hit for the Orange & Black. Radack swiped two bases.
Brown led the Panthers at the plate by going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Bourbonnais (1-0) picked up the win for BSC by striking out one in a perfect 10th. Starter Miles Nordgren threw nine innings, giving up three runs, six hits and walk with three strikeouts. Junior reliever
Nick Land (1-3) took the loss for the Warriors. He struck out two and gave up four hits and two runs in 2.1 innings. Sophomore starter
Will Nichol fanned six and allowed seven hits, one earned run and two walks in seven innings.
Hendrix and BSC will wrap up the series with a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
